Screen Flickering / Shaking violently on Laptop - only happens with UE / UEFN

Hi

I have been using UEFN since launch, previously had never used UE and never played Fortnite until UEFN launch, I generally use a gaming PC but also purchased a gaming laptop which is where the issues are.

I know very little with tech, the laptop says intel core i7
Nvidia geforce RTX
Vector GP75

The issue almost always happens when the laptop is plugged in, when running on the battery I think it has only happened once or twice, problem is I only get up to 40 mins on the battery (bought laptop new) I am told all the graphics and demanding stuff uses the battery faster - unsure how true that is, It has happened in UE twice but always happens with UEFN sometimes I might get an hour or a few hours and other times it is instant or I get a few mins and then the screen shakes so violently, I have to do CTRL / ALT / Del to stop it, I might get a few mins or longer before this happens again or it can be instant, drives me mad - wondering if anyone else has suffered this and if there is a way to stop it from happening, Fortnite works fine on the battery when playing the game, everything else works fine that I have tried, the only time this happens in Unreal editor and UEFN, I only purchased the laptop for UEFN so am getting little use on it, the laptop was approx ÂŁ1400
MSI Vector GP76 12UE-423UK Gaming Laptop

Any help / info would be really appreciated, thanks in advance.
I put up an image of what is shown after the crash which happens all the time.

(Unsure if shaking is the correct word, maybe flickering but so badly and fast that it appears like screen shaking, takes up the whole screen)

I tried to record what happens using CTRL ALT Z with GForce Experiance but oddly on running back the recording everything looks perfect it does not show this flickering which is so bad that sometimes you can’t access anything and have no control other than holding down the on button to power down or let the charge run out of the laptop so it turns off.
As I said it only ever happens in Unreal Editor and UEFN nothing else, on some occasions the editor has worked for hours fine but this unfortunately does not happen very often.

@Fallen-Champ Thank you for your report! Can you please re-post using the “New Issue” option on the Issues and Bug Reporting forums? Posts with this feature are connected directly into our development team so we can quickly get to them!

Are you guys having a laugh?
That was the 4th time I have posted that,

1st posted it 26 days ago, you kindly asked if I could post it as new in Issues & Bug Reporting Forums - link to this 1st post is HERE

2nd time I posted it 18 days ago jay.all.the.way kindly asked me to do the same and post it as new in Issues & Bug Reporting - Link to that 2nd Post is HERE

3rd time I posted it you kindly asked me a 2nd time to post it as a New Post in Bugs and Reporting Forums - 17 days ago, Link to that HERE

And 2 days ago I posted it again then asked to re-post again, just seems like ground hog day, I think I might be better off trying to find an answer from a google search or sell the laptop as it’s no good to me I only purchased it for UE and UEFN and nobody has suggested anything to try other than constant repeat posts into an area nobody answers.

Thank you for the replies but I won’t waste your time anymore - Have a great Xmas and all the best for 2024

Hi @Fallen-Champ , I see the problem here.

Our human robots are asking you to post this using the “New Issue” interface (As opposed to New Discussion/New Question)

But, even if you post this as new issue - if a developer is unable to reproduce the issue, the likelihood of it being fixed is much smaller.

A video of this flickering/shaking (even if just recorded with a cell phone) would be helpful.

The first thing to try for troubleshooting this is to make sure your GPU drivers are up to date.

Thank you so much for the reply Astrotronic & for explaining about the bots.

I will see if my wife can get some footage of the screen flickering or crashing as she has a smart phone I just have a basic crappy thing without even a camera.

I will have a read up on getting the drivers up to date, PC tech is not my strong point, hopefully I will find something on youtube, thanks again

You’re welcome!

If you run ‘Device Manager’ you should see your specific GPU Model listed under “Display Adapters”

I also wanted to mention - most laptops have 2 Display Adapters (A slower/lower power one integrated into the CPU, and a powerful dedicated one (Nvidia/AMD)) The fact that you’re only seeing this problem when plugged in might mean that the problem is with the dedicated card (since laptops might use the integrated card when unplugged to save power)

Thanks I will try and look into this tomorrow as I have all day off.
Another odd things is when the screen was flickering I tried to record but the recording when I watched was perfect and did not show what I was seeing on the screen at that time.

I will run that check tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
Thanks again, really appreciate your help

This is what it is showing under display adapters

Earlier I had a crash with UE and this was on screen
crash

That’s the Integrated (Intel) and Dedicated (Nvidia) GPUs I mentioned.

I wouldn’t worry about the Intel one, if you’re using that while developing in UEFN you’ll see low FPS.

3060 is a good card though. Just make sure that you’re selecting ‘GeForce RTX 30 Series (Notebooks)’ when downloading drivers.

Thank you for the info, is there anything I can do to stop the crashes and screen spasms, I just had UE on earlier, purchased quite a few packs in the Winter Sale but can’t even check them, I will try to find some answers as it is getting me down now.

Thanks again for replying
Would downloading a different driver more for this laptop sort the problem, I might see if I can find out how to do that.

You’re welcome,

The first thing to try for stopping these crashes is to download the latest drivers.

Should be as simple as downloading + installing them.

Thanks for the link I just installed that driver, it did it again earlier and couldn’t do ctrl alt del instead had no option but to hold down the power button to stop it.

Just restarted laptop, it is sounding like 2 fans are kicking in instead of one, I can hear what sounds like another fan in a different area on the laptop - so far so good, Hopefully I will be able to come back in a day or two and say a massive thank you.

Fingers Crossed

Unfortunately it just happened again & had to hold down the power button until the laptop went off, no other way to stop it with the screen so bad and mouse not working.

Really would love to get this sorted or I think I might have to sell the laptop and get one where this doesn’t happen - it is odd how it does not happen on anything else or any other game only the UEFN / UE Editor

Bummer, It could definitely be a hardware issue. (Where UE/UEFN just stressed it in a certain way that shows this behavior)

Also try lowering the scalability settings (Settings Cog in Upper-Right → Engine Scalability Settings)

The last thing that I can think of would be to try run the editor in DirectX 11 mode instead of DirectX 12. (Applicable only to Unreal Engine and not UEFN though)

Under Edit → Project Settings, Change ‘Default RHI’ to DirectX 11 and see how it runs. (It might stress your system less and become useable)

Ok thanks I will look at this, a guy at work tonight is pretty good with tech, he recommended the laptop to me so will ask him to take a look.

Thanks again for your help I really appreciate it

I contacted the seller and they said they will take the laptop back inspect it and if required give a refund or another laptop if they find a problem so that is good.

This morning I found that if the screen is not 100% maxed (the window) the problem does not happen so I have it set to approx 99% you can hardly tell it’s not at maximum screen size, providing the window isn’t on max then I can use UEFN / UE with no issues, been on it most of the night for multiple hours and not happened once so the two factors are the laptop charging and the screen / window been at max size, unsure if that means anything.

As it’s working great on this discovery I am happy to just keep using it this way, thanks again for your time and information.
