I’m having trouble meshing most of the surface of a wind turbine. The alignment process was successful, but the sparse cloud shows very little detail of the turbine itself—only the surrounding area and a few parts of the turbine are visible. It seems the alignment relied primarily on the surroundings and metadata.
The dataset was captured using a P1 camera with excellent distance and overlap parameters, but the turbine surface is smooth, white, and mostly uniform, with very few visible features or texture There are 2700 images in total.
Is there a way to generate a mesh from this dataset, or alternatively, to create something like an orthophoto or another useful output?
I’m looking for the best way to make use of the existing data or improve workflow for data capturing in similar scenarios.
Hello @Rango986
To process such dataset could be problematic for photogrammetry, as you are missing the important features.
There are some workarounds, how to process such objects, but probably they won’t work for you.
I suppose the best option here will be the combination with the laser scan data.
Thank you for detailed answer.
I was hoping that there is a way to “force” RC to make some kind of mesh without involving laser scans, does not have to be perfect since it would be used mostly as reference for images -a t least for now.
I managed to achieve something better using DJI TERRA trial, but I would prefer to stay within RC.
While working on this, I had 2 errors, could you help me understand what happened.
Error 1 – During alignment, there were no corrupt images, and I had cleared the cache. The issue was only resolved when I started a new project using the same images. I also tried both default and alternative settings.
Hi @Rango986
Are you able to reproduce the first issue? It can happen, when there is quite a lot of control points. Are you using some in your project?
The error 2 could appear, when the reconstruction settings are not ideal. Can you check this post with possible solutions: Error when modeling in Normal mode, but not in Preview - #2 by OndrejTrhan?
