Major - Meshes deleted from my map's environment randomly, cannot get them back

Update:

After a few days of only creating in one level instead of switching back and forth, I haven’t had this problem. However I would like to use a separate level for modeling props, different from my main level. And I’m currently unable to use this workflow because I’m worried I will lose chunks of my main game environment if I leave the main level. I would love to know when this issue has been fixed so that I can go back to using separate level for modeling.

Hey so I ran into a problem that’s pretty bad for artists. I have two levels in my project, one for the main map and another where I’m creating my models for the map. When I returned to the main level after spending a couple of hours in my modeling level, several meshes were missing from the main scene. They stayed missing even after I tried playing the game, and closing and reopening UEFN. The meshes still show up in my content library, but they’re no longer placed in the map. They don’t show in the outliner.

These are static meshes not actors, it’s boxes and stairs from the modeling tools.

This is a big problem for me, because much of the structure of the house I’m working on has been destroyed and I have to rebuild it, all while wondering if it’s going to get deleted again once I finish rebuilding. And I plan to use UEFN’s modeling tools and materials tools for most of my game art, so I really don’t want my meshes getting deleted. Maybe next time I’ll be even farther along with my house and I’ll lose even more progress.

For now I’m going to quit using a separate modeling level, and I’ll do my modeling in the main level. Maybe if I never leave the main level my meshes won’t get deleted. Do you think that will help? I would eventually like to use a separate level for modeling.

Update:

Today I returned to my Modeling level and everything is invisible. There’s nothing but a blue empty grid, and the assets still show in the outliner but they’re all greyed out in the outliner. So I’m definitely only going to use one level from now on, because switching levels seems to mess things up. Fortunately I didn’t lose anything important.

@Fresnella , are you still experiencing this issue? This isn’t related to the building prop issues we’ve been discussing correct?

@jay_villanueva I haven’t experienced this mesh deletion problem again. It doesn’t appear to be related to the building props. At this point in the project I’m pretty sure I hadn’t added any building props yet. I don’t actually know if this post’s issue was resolved or if I just stopped experiencing it because I quit using multiple levels in my project. Some meshes got deleted when I left my main level to work on my modeling level, so to reduce risk I decided to abandon my modeling level altogether and do all of my work on the main level.

In the future I would like to be able to do my modeling in a special level, separate from my main level, because it keeps my project cleaner. But I gave up on that workflow because I was scared meshes might get deleted if I switch back and forth between levels.

Have other creators been able to switch between multiple levels in a project without damaging their work? I would really like to be able to do that.

That sounds scary. I have used different levels but I didn’t do much on them because I couldn’t test live edit with them. However, I ve noticed missing static meshes right around that time when I was testing the other levels so it might be the same issue.

However, there are 5 issues atm in relation to desync from UEFN and Creative and one of them requires an editor restart to be fixed. If that doesn’t work, launch live edit and see if the meshes show in Creative (that’s issue #2). If that doesn’t work, I would recommend using building props instead of meshes (they seem to work fine for me and haven’t had any issues). Backup your project first though.

Hope this helps

Hi @Wertandrew! Yes this issue is too scary for me to experiment with! I plan on only building in one level until i have confirmation that I won’t lose meshes. Unfortunately substituting building props for static meshes is definitely not an option for me at this moment  because of a known building prop issue I’m experiencing, that @jay_villanueva and the team have been working hard to fix for me. Blocker - Can't test game for the past 3 days - Content Beacon and Infinite Downloading - #14 Jay I’m tagging you in case Wertandrew’s comment is useful to you.
