What is Shadows Denoiser in the GPU Profiling? [UE5]

Hey everyone,

I’m looking at optimising my game and have this listed in the live GPU stats. I can’t find any information about the ShadowsDenoiser yet it takes up a decent amount of render time. If anyone could give me some more info about it / if it is possible to optimise that would be excellent!

Are you using ray traced shadows? The denoiser allows a low sample per pixel count to look visually comparable to a higher sample count at a much lower cost. If you skip the denoising step, your shadows will look terrible unless you crank up the sample count which will cost far more.

As far as I can test, removing the denoiser has no impact on the quality of the shadow. There is a slight almost invisible noise on the penumbra, similar to some photography noise, but is HARD to spot. and increasing the desire light sample to 2 can fix that, been a few ms faster
