VRAM affecting Movie Render Queue Render Foliage Issue?

Hi all,

I am having the same issue as many others, where foliage is not rendering in MRQ. I have tried all of the possible solutions that I have found online, but nothing has worked.

However, something strange happened when I started rendering on multiple machines. Out of the 3 machines that I used (all mid- to high-end), one of them managed to render foliage, while the other two did not render any foliages at all. All 3 machines had the same render settings and console commands, so I am starting to wonder if there are any “editor-specific settings” that affect foliage rendering.

EDIT: I just did another test with a 4th machine, and it also managed to render foliage. So now I have 4 machines rendering with the same settings, and 2 of them worked. This leads me to another interesting question: does VRAM affect MRQ’s handling of foliage? Both of the machines that managed to render foliage had 12GB of VRAM, while the other two only had 10GB of VRAM.

It would be great if the DEV Team could shed some light on this issue.

To clarify, the problem I see a lot of people having is MRQ crashing in complex scenes with a lot of foliage, is your problem that foliage is simply not always showing up in your final renders? And are you using Nanite?

Would need more info to help here.

Hi @TheRealBiomes

My problem is simply foliage not showing up in the final. No crash. Nanite is disabled but I’m planing to do another test soon with nanite enabled. However the fact that 10GB VRam not rendering foliage at all puts me in wonder.

If it had crashed I would have concluded that the scene is too heavy and needs optimization but instead it rendered fine, just no the foliage showing.

Thanks

If you can show what you’re trying to render that might help identify the issue. Is it only affecting anything designated as “foliage” or also things like LGTs if you’re using them.

An easy way to find out if you have more foliage than MRQ can handle would be to just delete foliage until it successfully renders. Also check your VRAM usage during the render.
