Virtual shadow map page appearing stuck on initial load.

The issue we’re seeing is that on initial load into the level there can appear what looks like virtual shadow map pages/tiles stuck shadowed. It can be a couple of nearby tiles. And has the same visual behavior as using the shadow map visualizer in the editor where you can see the radius around the camera where the pages switch levels. The issue persists until the player move far enough away and it’s fixed on returning. Or when using console commands to modify virtual shadow settings and causing things to recalculate.

I’d like to ask if this is something that has been seen before and if there are any specific settings that might be causing this to occur.

Hi, this looks very similar to what can happen with VSM caching and Nanite landscape see [Content removed]

The solution is to turn off r.shadow.virtual.cache 0 or to use r.Nanite.VSMInvalidateOnLODDelta 1. If you are easily able to reproduce the issue, looking into the logic in FLandscapeRenderSystem::PerformShadowInvalidations may provide further clues as to what is happening.

Thank you, I somehow missed this thread in my previous search. I’ll give these settings a try.

I implemented logic to toggle the shadow cache during loading screens (toggling r.shadow.virtual.cache) and so far that seems to be working! I’ve not been able to reproduce the issue since.
