Just installed 5.3. On the VRTemplateMap when I preview using VR, one eye is fine and the other eye is filled with lots of rapidly pulsing white dots on a black field. Completely deleted and reinstalled but same issue. Last versions of Unreal 5.2 have worked perfectly. All other VR apps working perfectly. Anybody know what’s up?

Which HMD are you using?
Are you building/testing for the device or for windows/openXR?
Are you using Instanced Stereo and Mobile Multiview?
Which RHI are you testing with?
My apologies: I’m brand new to Unreal, so not sure how to answer some of your questions…
- I’m using a Meta Quest 2
- I guess I’m just building for VR games. Is that openXR?
- Instanced Stereo and Mobile Multiview are both checked On
- No idea what RHI I’m testing with.
No worries, if you’re building for the Quest you’d be packaging it and running it on the Quest hardware, otherwise you’d be testing this using PCVR more or less just testing running on your PC hardware and passing it to the Quest.
Try disabling Mobile Multiview, this usually solves the one eye issue.
Hello, I am having the exact same problem using the Pimax Crystal on the 5.3 VRTemplateMap VR Preview. I tried disabling Mobile Multiview, but it did not change anything. Also tried disabling instanced stereo with no change.
I found that the large black box in the right eye changes / moves / disappears depending on what your r.ScreenPercentage is set to.
r.ScreenPercentage: 0-50 = no issue with right eye
r.ScreenPercentage: 60 = Very barely start to see it at the top left of the right eye
r.ScreenPercentage: 70 = Starts filling up most of the right eye view
r.ScreenPercentage: 80 = Fills up the entire right eye view
r.ScreenPercentage: 90 = Moves a bit, fills most of right eye view
r.ScreenPercentage: 100 = Fills up most of right eye view
r.ScreenPercentage: 110 = Starts lessening in the right eye
r.ScreenPercentage: 120 = No longer appears in right eye

Hey there @ColdBomb1! I was going to ask if you were running forward rendering or deferred as I have seen a couple of reports on some forward rendering issues. Leaning towards a bug considering screen percentage having that affect.

ColdBomb1 that’s exactly what I’ve got going on.
This happens to me too when using Virtual Desktop and SteamVR. Try using airlink and oculus as the xr runtime, then it will work. They need to fix this bug regarding steam vr for sure.
Unfortunately, Oculus and Airlink are exactly what I’ve been using this whole time and are now having the issue.
Update: the issue seems to be specific to DX12. Does not occur on DX11.
I had thought changing to deferred shading had fixed it for me earlier, but the screen percentage had reset to a value where it wasn’t visible instead.
It seems the only way to avoid the issue is to use DX11 as far as I can tell.

if you disable steamvr and log in only through the app oculus as openxr then the eye just flickers white
helps to switch to diretx 11
but this is not the way out )
Hey there @stas_lu! Welcome back to the community! Are you using Forward Rendering or Deferred Rendering?
I have DirectX 12 and can’t downgrade.
Unfortunately quite a lot of people are having the same issues with VR, Remember that it is still a relatively new platform even though it came out back in 2013, Unreal doesn’t have much support for VR since it isn’t something that is easy to work with. But Hopefully these Fixes may be implemented soon.

I think I have the same issue. The scene renders fine on the Left lens of MQuest3, while the right one has very nasty white pixels everywhere. I am using Unreal engine 5.3, when I started the project everything worked fine on both, but after some optimization like light baking and trying to cut on drawcalls here and there, I got this issue only on the right one. Not sure if this is the same topic but I hope somebody can help me as well.
