UEFN Project Corrupted - Cannot validate against first published version (only Epic can fix??)

Summary

Hi,
Was working on a really long (1.5+ month in devloping) and important project while today, out of nowhere, the project won’t compile anymore.
The problem presented himself after publishing the map. Don’t know if it’s a coincidence but the .asset file pointing at a /sys/published folder might be an hint.

Rollbacking in revision control won’t help also.
Tried also deleting the project and starting from scratch in another directory but nothing works.
Deleted verse cached at path AppData\Local\UnrealEditorFortnite\Saved\VerseSnapshot neither that worked.

It seems to fail to compile the Assets .digest:

The reason seems to be a Chess folder that generate a module named as the project folder and it won’t validate the file for this conflict. The thing is that I managed to publish a version with this subfolder named Chess and now it seems to try to sync the asset.digest with the published version and it fails.
Tried to move every resource to the root content, renaming every possible file and folder that gave conflict and to launch session but error persist with the same confliting resources as Chess.importedModels.Chess while I’ve deleted it.

Cloning the project by deleting .urc folder and “bindings” in .uefnproject file, creating as a matter of fact a new online project when linking to control revision system, will fix the issue.
This confirms the problem is linked to the last online built version or some cached version around (couln’t find it tho on the local system, browsed everywhere)

Browsed the logs for more info but seems to be some conflict in in projects files related to filesystem that I cannot directly edit, down the full log.

Verse alone will compile if launched without launching a session.

There was a similar error ““Ambiguous identifier” in the log
The original error had to do with a symbolic link
One Drive does not support symbolic links,

As of the 31.00 Update, Asset.digest.verse was giving me thousands of errors due to having a folder in my files titled “FNSG” while the project and verse path was also titled “FNSG” This was never an issue before 31.00. It gives me this error:

“Ambiguous identifier; could be denni@fortnite.com.FNSG.FNSG or denni@fortnite.com.FNSG”

Fix: Renaming the affected Folder, updating the redirectors, and deleting old folder.

Just giving extra context incase any of these extra errors have anything to do with the main HUD message device versus error!

Hi @Jimbohalo10, I tried firstly by renaming the project folder and deleting the subfolder that was named Chess. But it seems like it is trying to download and validating against the previous published version.

In fact the Chess/ImportedModels/Chess folder does not exist anymore after I deleted it. But it keeps trying to validate the project using it.
Is there any cache that could cause the issue?

Tried renaming also the project name and all the references in .uefnproject file, externalObjects and actor folders with another name but nothing seems to work

As a matter of fact I just cloned the project removing the .urc folder and the references to the online version creating another project.
This time compilation and validation goes straight, seems the problem is related to the uploaded version or some cached version

Originally deleted on the content browser project and then sent it back up when you Launch from UEFN

The Verse Path format is different after Patch 31.00 has changed, when the project Verse Path was changed when “Launched” from the UEFN toolbar.

Nobody seems to understand this and when another person sent me the project as a WinRar

The version completes correctly.

The only clue was this past project was in early days to early UEFN and Creative 1.0

There are not any documents to refer to and the information has been gained by trial and error

Everyone please remember that UEFN is still in Beta, only recently has this moved from Experimental ,

The importance of Snapshots being take is understated in the documentation.
Finally, I would ask that you backup all your projects to USB with a compressor like WinRAR

Try and make use a standard path like C:\User\OWNER\source\repos\UEFNProjects.

Where OWNER is you Windows username path without spaces or symbols.

If OneDrive stops and wont start then your project will be unavailable

Just to give some context. The project I’ve been working on has been created this August in UEFN so creative 2.0.

This is what I can see from the content-service

All the projects have been moved out of OneDrive folder but i don’t think OneDrive is the culprit since it never runned.

Tried to resync also the project from scratch totally deleting it from the filesystem but no luck.
It seems a problem related to validating against the last published version (which has the Chess subfolder) so nothing I can access directly on Epic backend, i’m in a current state where I need to validate against last published project when launching a session but launching a session fails and I can’t overwrite last published version of the island basically blocking any possible move by me.

(Just opening a little sub-thread down here)
Cloning the project and republishing the island on another repository (meaning I now have 2 different island with the same content) “worked”. I’m using double quotes since now every version i’m publishing will keep the last published version code (wtf? LOL, also managed to publish an island without calculating resources in any way)

Yeah, seems the exact same problem of @D3NNI . My guess is that backwards compatibility check got re-enabled? @Flak may confirm or deny

Yeah i’m kinda confident both with Verse and C++ (currently working in IT)

In my local version both of that paths generating the conflicts (the Chess.Subfolder.Chess modul have been deleted as first try for the next version that should be pushed to the epic backend.
As you can see Verse itself compiles correctly in a screen below putting the correct modules without launching a Session.

The following is indeed the current state of the hierarchy of the project that fail to validate, as you can see no more Chess subfolders, neither Texture named ones or actual resources as mesh or material named as keywords for the verse modules and resources

The problem on that log files ONLY occurs only when pressing “Launch session” (verse compilation itself won’t fail and instead will fix that digest to a correct version) in the UEFN editor:

At that moment the Assets.digest file gets overwritten with the wrong modules
What happens I suppose is in the following flux diagram

As you can the the folder on which he tries to validate it’s that sys folder that is normally empty you browse it in the project directory tree. The behaviour I expect is that on launching session a validation downloading the last published version .digest happens and validating against it.

In this case the only solution for this would be to delete the published version or disable this mechanism on Epic side.

What is not clear is how I managed to publish a project version with a subfolder named as the root folder and gave me no validation error in first place.
And now when trying to validate against the first published version it fails.

When this happened to the project trying to fix.
Renamed the private project in UEFN content manager that way its safe

Then, I reloaded the project from WinRAR, but this time, I renamed it by adding 29 to the end. This worked, with UEFN saying it needed to make a new Project as the current Verse path was in use, so I added ProjectName29. The sync problems ended because there was nothing to sync with!

Restore from a URC Snapshot from the last good on then backup the project to WinRAR archive

Now restore the WinRAR archive to a new location, rename the project to the new name with 29 on the end, open UEFN, Browse to the new location and Launch.
This worked for me and your original publication is safe!.

When trying to rebuild and pass validation, just delete every asset that says it fails in the message
log. You can safely delete inside this version knowing it’s safe.
Turn off/disconnect URC on this backup as there is no need just slows down Validation

you could delete the Asset. digest.verse then the launch would need to create a new one.

The possibilities are endless, you can publish a private version in another name!

Probably due to errors in the control files rather than the assets themselves

I also tried to clone the project by deleting the .urc folder and canceling the “binding” section in the .uefnproject file but in that way it simply clones itself and is not useful in any way since i’m trying to keep working with this island code published instead of having to publish a new island that would inevitably bring out a different island code.

Just me trying to be safe and not damage my original.
If you change projectname.uefnproject to projectname29.uefnproject will make a new island .

On the backup you can delete asset.digest.verse before creating a new island . Maybe that will produce a working version of the asset.digest.verse file which you can copy into your original and that will probably fix a lot of the problems
Anyway good luck with whatever you choose

I’m just trying to avoid to republishing a new island since all the marketing content has been linked to this island code and now running.

As I explained in various points the bug resides in a process internal to Unreal Editor for fortnite that syncs with the published version of the file. I can modify what I want locally but none will have effects since the bugged Assets.digest is on Epic side.
The only solution would be cloning the island and creating in reality a new island avoiding the problem at the root since it won’t sync with anything and just creating a new island from scratch.

But that won’t allow me to mantain the current island code which is bad for the first marketing point

I think i’ll wait news from something on Epic side before taking the drastic decision of republishing it as a new island. Maybe it’s a trivial thing to resolve on their side.

Whilst working on fixing another problem.
Came across a problem where they had used a DayTime(SkyDome) from Fortnite 1.0 Creative.

When deleting this UEFN 31.10 will replace this with the UEFN Verse version.

The UEFN equivalent to this legacy device has a known problem.
