I get this error whenever I try starting UEFN. I try reinstalling everything (fortnite epic launcher, UEFN, GPU drivers ) from scratch nothing can fix this issue. Anyone got an idea what might be the problem?
Here is the error that the crash reporter gives me:
Assertion failed: [File:D:\build++Fortnite\Sync\Engine\Source\Runtime\D3D12RHI\Private\D3D12Util.cpp] [Line: 873] hr failed at D:\build++Fortnite\Sync\Engine\Source\Runtime\D3D12RHI\Private\D3D12Resources.cpp:569 with error DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED with Reason: 887A002B
Hi @bubbleslahey@Frenzyguy that crash report seems to indicate a GPU crash. Please take a look at UE5 CRASH when it launches for some troubleshooting options. In addition, please make sure youre GPU drivers are up to date. Thanks!
Like I said, I completely cleaned up my gpu drivers with ddu and did a fresh install. I will try another gpu, I read somewhere that rtx 30xx series on windows 11 + ue5 made the gpu crash for some random reason.
Do you happen to have Riva Tuner or MSI Afterburner or some other hardware monitor/overclocking utilities running? These software often cause issues, so closing them would be recommended.
Ok,my gpu is an rtx 3070, I just tried with a 1070ti and it works. Like I said I read on nvidia forums that 30xx (3090, 3080 etc.) have a similar problem with UE5 (I did try UE5 and it returns the same error). The gpu works fine on stress test, and in any game I throw at it. I will further test on a windows 10 build on the same machine.
Ok I tried everything and just for fun decided to run UE5 and UEFN in windows 8 compatibility mode, with rivatuner closed, updated driver it finally worked. I fixed it with the windows program troubleshooter I selected the app and it suggested running it in windows 8 compat mode and it worked. There must be some call made to the gpu that makes it crash, probably related to rtx or dx12 or both because now it works like a charm!
Edit: Step to ensure you don’t crash.
1: windows 8 compatibility mode
2: reinstall drivers completely with a clean wipe (use DDU) (just to be on the safe side)
3:make sure to close rivatuner (you can also close afterburner)
Optionial: add TdrLevel into registry files a quick google search will help you with this, but I don’t advise to play into registry files if you are not familiar with it.
The unreal engine makes call to the gpu which are not fully compatible with windows 11, probably relating to shaders/rtx/dx12, which is why it is working with an older class gpu (1070ti here) I hope this helps other find their way into UEFN.

this is strange
at least in my case on a 2070 super … this fixed the issue to a degree? on initial project lunch and tinkering about it crashes after a bit but after relaunching it its fine. its strange but hey it works
