Training Stream - Getting Started with Landscapes - Jan 17 - Live from Epic HQ!

awww I missed it… will you guys post a video of the livestream?

ok ignore my post. the video wasn’t in the videos list when I looked the first time. now I see it!!

At one point you copied a .txt file into the material editor. Is there a link to this text file somewhere so I can see how it was put together?

Has the footage been uploaded yet? You mentioned putting the material out there for us, could you provide a link? Loved the stream, learned a bunch, thanks!

great stream, got me started, been doing a lot of 3d in the past years, but noob in UE, and I’m noticing it’s great and became awesome with all sort of support, really wanna dig into it further, really wanna get into those environments more …

  • that said: painting with pressure sensitive drawing tablets in landscape or material mode - is the pressure sensing working - it was said that there is no official support - how about unofficial - cause it’s like sculpting in zbrush, but the pressure sensing really adds a lot more feel to it - this feels like a step back from organic sculpting in zb…

  • also shortcuts for smoothing should be like ctrl-shift or something, please do steal the workflow from zbrush, it’s intuitive to most sculpters

  • also can we export the landscape with textures to work on in 3dmax and zbrush and then import back, or at least the heightmap generated, with the texture and all?

I cant acces the download of the resources used, google says i need permission

Can´t download the material file, need permision… TT

Hey All,

Thanks again for coming out and watching the stream! I really enjoyed the lighthearted atmosphere and the great questions y’all had for me. The next streams will focus on Foliage and then World Composition. I’ve seen some of you asking for the .txt file of the shader I used during the stream yesterday. P has attached it to the original post so you can download and copy the text into a blank material, and boom!

Cheers,

I’ve updated the link so try again.

I’ve updated the link so try again.

Ty for fast response, everything working now !!!

PD: Great tutorial, looking forward for more landscape tutorials

How can I resolve this:

The Material is from this:
https://www.unrealengine.com/marketp...uropean-forest

Demo map opens just fine with the material.

I will be streaming on Thursdays usually around 7:30 PM. I will either have a topic, or I will just be developing and you guys can ask questions throughout

My Twitch Channel

Thanks man! I am also looking forward to future streams. You can catch me this Thursday @ 7:30 on my Twitch Channel doing some more development at home!

Chiming in a bit late… but what would be the best way to add more vertices to a landscape? Or find a workaround. Things I’m imagining. The thing is my landscape was scaled up by 500/500/350, which I later foolishly learned is very big for terraforming, so:
*Copying over all landscape data to a landscape with higher fidelity
*Upping the count somehow in the editor. Maybe code change?
*Extract the current heightmap from UE4 and re-import onto a higher detail terrain mesh.

Any ideas how I could realize this?
Thanks in advance!

The archive is up

Really enjoyed the recording, so gutted I missed live stream. I found landscaping resources in UE a bit slim, so glad I found this. Are you recording you personal Twitch streams? I can’t wait to see more of you insights on how to use landscaping inside UE. I have to admit a few of the features covered lost me, but I am determined to work everything out.
Thanks again for providing me with a nugget that will help me move forward…

Im having a problem which is as follows:
As soon as i apply Grass “Material” as filled layer, and a tiny bit of “Stone” the whole landscape section will be displaced.
Anyone else having this problem? Did i miss to tick something?

Greetings

Hey, so I’ve got an issue with the displacement. I’ve followed your steps in setting up the material and read some general stuff about the subject. The tiling of the textures are working correctly from the material instance. The displacement is not working however, and changing the displacement numbers in the instance has no impact. I’m using world composition, might this be effecting the material in some way?

This sounds like the perfect time to try the Resample option within Landscape Mode> Manage > Change Component Size

Cheers,

As soon as you paint the Cobblestone layer into any component, since that is the layer that is using displacement, that area will be displaced. You should be able to use the displacement parameter and dial back the effect.

Cheers,
