Sun Direction not updating

When using the default SkyDome, to rotate the sun you need to first select your directional sun light, and rotate to your desired angle. Once you have done that, you need to select the skydome again, and press the “Update Material” button from the details panel. This will allow the material to be reset and re-position the sun’s angle appropriately.

Hope that helps!

And I just noticed you already mentioned that…
I have a project for an Ocean system and included a custom Skydome that allows continuous time of day with day/night cycles, and all you need to do to rotate the sun is to change the current time. If it helps, you can download it from here:

The basic system that is built in has a few limitations, hope this helps

But the cause of your noted above should be investigated as well by Epic.

I´ve found out that in 4.5 the DirectionalLightStationary is not moving the light disc in the SkySphereBlueprint anymore.

In 4.5.1 there is the same problem.

But: I´ve tested it a bit in both version, and if i select the skySphere and the LightSource together in 4.5.1 and rotate them, the sun disc follows, in 4.5 this wasnt the case. In 4.5 the sun disc doesn´t move with the light source.

I´m doing a lot with lights and i couldn´t see this in earlier versions, there if it rotated the light source the sun disc was movin with it

Is this a bug in the new 4.5 release?

What i did:

I´ve made a new scene, third person or blank, tested both.
Made a new level.
clicked on DirectionalLightStationary, rotate: No Sun Movement.
Select DirectionalLightStationary and SkySphereBlueprint
in 4.5: No Sun Movemet
in 4.5.1: Sun Moves

tested all the sun and skysphere setting, also world settings, everything iss on standard setting and should run, turning on moveable doesn´t work and in earlier versions that wasn´t needed to turn on for simple sun movement in Editor Viewport. I´ve also turned on Refresh material on the SkySphere, but this isn´t needed too for normal reasons.
The Direction Light Actor in the SkySphere is assigned too.

I think this is really a bug that comes from 4.5 Update, there u did many light patching for raycasting and some other things, automatic light maps too, some of them may cause the problem.

Thank you for helping out and making this engine as great as it is and becomes

thanks there, but i have done a day night cicle system by myself some weeks ago.

Why i´m reporting here is: I wanted to start a new scene from scratch and wanted to rotate the sun after placing some meshes, there i recognized that weird happening that wasn´t there some weeks ago.

Oh ok, sorry about that!

I will try and reproduce this on my end as well, but Epic should look into this one. If I come up with anything in my testing I will let you know.

if i disable the visibility on my skydome and move my sun, than reactivate the visibility of the dome and press “refresh material” it works, thanks for that at first, but i think thats not the way it should do, normally the skydome should update automatically

Hello Grafíx,

I was unable to reproduce the that you are describing. I was able to refresh the material on the sky box by clicking the highlighted field in the following picture (can be found in the details panel after selecting the sky_sphere). This updated the position of the Sun for me.

I noticed that you mentioned the “Refresh Material” check box in your first post. Are you saying that this does not update the position of the sun when clicked?

hi there and thanks for request.

Yes the sun updates if i press the “Refresh material” Button, but in earlier Versions i didnt have to click that “button”, the sun has updated automatically. It´s not a big deal to press the refresh button but it wwas better to setup lighting before.

Hello Grafíx,

I have submitted a request to the development team (Jira UE-4957). I will provide updates with any pertinent information as it become available. I hope this helps.

Make it a great day.

thank you
