Status of Skinned Meshes (and Metahuman) and Nanite Support

Hello,

Browsing through tickets it looks like this hasn’t been asked in a while so- figured I would ask again/for a status update.

We are interested in potentially using Nanite for skeletal meshes in 5.8 (and beyond, we are early and will for sure get updates before shipping) and we’re wondering what rendering/skinning features are currently not supported by Nanite skinned meshes (and if they are planned to be supported eventually/if there is any kind of timeline/guess for when they would be supported). We’ve seen from past posts that stuff like morph targets, grooms, cloth, blend shapes, and translucency were not supported yet (back in 5.5). In the same vein we’ve read that Metahuman plans to eventually support Nanite (so I assume outputting usable Nanite meshes itself)- so we’re curious what specific features it uses that aren’t supported by Nanite that’s blocking that/if there is any estimate/guess for when they might happen.

We have also done some testing with LODing off bones on Nanite skinned meshes (with the hope being to reduce CPU costs by dropping bones we don’t need at distance) and have found it works in 5.8 (in 5.7 it was busted/didn’t skin correctly when bones dropped from the skeleton) however the mesh component never calculates a screen size / never tries to select an LOD other than 0 (which for general rendering with Nanite makes sense, there are no LODs- we only want ‘LODs’ on skinned meshes to get the skeleton to LOD)- is there any plans to support this in the future?

Any info you can provide would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi! The state hasn’t changed all the much since you evaluated it last. We do have experimental support for Nanite Translucency in 5.8 which could be used for MetaHumans, but most of the other items are still missing. We will be starting up work shortly to start addressing as much of that as we can. No exact ETA on that, but hoping to have some good progress by Q1’27.
