Saving a material while compiling it freezes the editor until it has finished compiling

  1. Hit apply
  2. Hit save

This is a new feature in 4.8, the deferring of saving until after compiling of shaders was completed. Saving on top of compiling shaders was causing issues with lower end PCs crashing and/or freezing. For what you are reporting I would just hit Save and not Apply then Save, hitting save will force a recompile and immediately save once recompiled.

I understand, but this is frustrating if you forget that b/c you are then forced to wait hours, particulary when compiling landscape material. Shader compiling should be cancelable :slight_smile:
