Render Graph - rendering on twos?

Hey,

We are looking to render “on twos” (or every other frame), out of render graph - but can’t seem to find something that supports this. Are we missing it?

I believe there used to be a way with Render Settings , so if there is not a way currently in render graph, could there be something easy to expose that we may be able to take advantage of?

Thanks!

Hey Robert, no they have not moved that feature over yet. That being said the feature in the old MRQ config would still evaluate every frame it just only wrote out every x frame it was not a time saver.

Are you looking to use this to save time or are you using this for a stylistic choice?

For now you could say it’s a stylistic choice. All our project is authored at 60fps, and most content is rendered at 60. Some of it needs to be rendered twice; once at 60, once at 30fps, but the frame numbers need to sync up with the 60 fps render. Ie, rendering every second frame.

We could render at 60 fps, and discard every second frame as a post process… but we thought that would be more wasteful.

Is there a likelihood of this for the future? It’s a common animation practice that we will probably have to mimic, it would be good to get the time save as well.

There are a number of systems that depend on temporal buildup so rendering only every other frame can potentially cause problems. I’m not sure how much time the older configs are saving on actual render time, if any. But I understand the desire. Either way, I’ll pass this information along to the product manager. I’ve actually had a JIRA in for this internally for a bit but its prioritized under other things. I’ll tag this in the JIRA as well for 5.8 consideration.
