Jumping in to confirm this. We run one of the popular hangout maps that relies on proximity chat, and this bug has completely crippled our island.
Our player count was cut in half —literally overnight— right after the update. On top of that, our community is flooding our DMs saying they can’t play because voice chat is broken.
We spent the last couple of days debugging this to make sure it wasn’t our fault. Here’s what we found:
It’s happening on every single one of our islands, not just the main one.
It’s also happening in our unpublished islands that we were working on.
The nail in the coffin: we can reproduce the bug on a brand new, blank project with nothing but proximity chat enabled.
It’s clear proximity chat itself is broken. Hope this info helps you guys track down the problem and get a fix out soon.
Bumping this for visibility as the Epic team starts their week.
This bug’s impact is severe and is affecting all maps that use proximity chat. Our map is a clear example of this, and our business continues to be significantly damaged daily.
To make the evidence as clear as possible for the Epic Games team, we have created two separate videos demonstrating the proximity chat bug’s failure rate under different conditions.
Test 1: Brand New, Blank Island
Result: 80% failure rate (2 successes in 10 attempts).
Test 2: Published Island
Result: 90% failure rate (1 success in 10 attempts).
I had to compress the video’s little bit for file size but you can clearly see its not working most of the time, even on a brand new island.
This new data proves the feature is fundamentally broken. The issue remains critical and was not fixed in the last update.
We are also being severely impacted by this critical bug. To help your investigation, I have just sent you both a private message.
It contains a new video and the perfectly matching log files from my own detailed testing with 2 players. I hope this evidence helps you find the root cause of the problem quickly.
Before July, my map was doing incredibly well, with great statistics and a very active community. However, since the Super Heroes update, the in-game voice chat has been broken, especially on Team 1, which is critical because my entire concept relies on proximity voice communication for RP interactions.
As a result, almost all of my players left, and it’s been over a month now without any fix or official update. It’s heartbreaking to see the project collapse because of this.
Additionally, for the past three months, the save system breaks after 58 minutes of gameplay:
Any new player joining after the 58-minute mark doesn’t receive their saved class.
This issue forces us to run short sessions, killing the immersion and ruining long RP games.
Please, we need help. These bugs are completely out of our hands and destroying the experience for hundreds of players on my island.
Hey folks, the team is still working on this, and we should have a fix within a few weeks. The ticket will be updated once we have the fix nailed down.
I truly hope you find a solution for the proximity chat issue.
Have you also heard about the bug affecting save data linked to class assignments?
On my side, everything works perfectly during the first 58 minutes of a session.
However, if a player joins a game that has been running for more than 58 minutes, their saved class is not loaded.
Before, we used to run 4-hour sessions without any problem, using four 1-hour timers chained together to manage the full session smoothly.
Now, I’m forced to limit sessions to 1h30, with the last 30 minutes being almost unplayable for new players.
Figured I should pass along a couple more weird audio bugs we’re seeing which are maybe related to this proximity chat ticket.
The Mixer device is failing to mute the ocean (environment sound) a lot of times. Even weirder, when u get lucky and proximity chat finally works it will sometimes break entirely and let players hear each other from across the whole map.
The big main issue is still that proximity chat is completely not working 90% of the time…
We just thought maybe it has something to do with it.
Hope these clues help you guys track down the root cause of the proximity chat bug.
