Proper way to test multiplayer maps

I want to test a multiplayer map. Right now when I post a Private Version and get a code I cannot get other people in my party to join that test map. The only way I have been able to test multiple players has been to publish a full (unlisted) map. Then I can bring in a 2nd account.

Is there an easier / better way to do this? I do have access to a 2nd PC if needed but it would be nice to be able to test with another device too such as a switch. I only need to edit the map on my main account.

I hope I’m just missing something simple.
Thanks!!

You need to add that another account as a team member for your project.

Hey Norrin!

There’s actually an easier way to test your map:

1. Start a session with your main account
2. Leave with your main account in-game the session (Now you should be in the lobby, do not actually stop the session in UEFN, just leave it in-game)
3. Click ready & launch again into the session (Now you should be in the standard UEFN hub)
4. Invite other players for example your 2nd account & press ready with those accounts & as soon as everyone is in the UEFN lobby you can start the session in UEFN & everyone should join the map

Now you can test your map with other players
Greetings!

Hi @realTreqy

I followed your steps and everything was working fine but as both accounts were joining the game I got this error for the 2nd account.

THERE WAS AN ERROR
Player is not eligible to play this content.

Does that 2nd account need to be part of a team or possibly have UEFN installed on that machine?

Thanks for your help and any suggestions!

@Patothief
So if someone is not a member of a map team there is no way to test a map even after you do a private code upload?

I was able to get a 2nd account into a map this way but it seems odd that you would need to be in a team just to play test the map and not edit at all. It would be difficult to have 5 or 10 people test the map with you this way.

Thanks for the help!

I see that putting the project into a team changes the way that monetization and ownership works for the map. Is there a way to have people test maps without that being done? I simply want to be able to have multiple accounts play test different maps. No editing. No privileges. No ownership, etc.

I think it is so. And if you want a random account to have access, you need to make a public publish (though it can be unlisted).

Also check: How can I play my map with friends without making them part of a team in UEFN?

I’ve seen workarounds though but I’m not sure if they really work and whether that is the real representation of multiplayer gameplay that needs to be tested.

Not sure what do you mean here? It shouldn’t interfere with those.

When I go to add a map to a team I get this message at the bottom:

Thanks for that link, I’ll read through it now!

It looks like you are attempting to transfer the project to another team instead of just adding new team members to existing team.

Oh I think you’re correct. So If I just create a new team it won’t say that. I’ll check out that option. Thanks again!

I think if your project is not assigned to team, then you will need to create a team but that should not mess with ownership. Assigning additional team members from that point on will not change ownership either as it stays on original creator.

That sounds correct but I get worried that somehow it will mess up any type of monetization. It’s a bit frustrating that there is not an easier way to just play test a map.

Hey,

That’s weird, but you definitely don’t have to be in a team.
You sure that you first joined the UEFN hub with your main account & after that invited your other accounts?

Edit:

Seems like it was fixed? Tried it again right now & it didn’t worked anymore, weird

Quick update:

Epic applied a patch today that blocks us to start a multiplayer edit session… Well

That’s unfortunate. Thanks for the updated info. I’m still just doing unlisted publishing until I’m sure about the whole team process.

I’m actually interested in this, I have a map I want 10+ friends to join in order to record a trailer, and it looks like we have to invite people to the team and they need to complete KYC. Which I think is a bit too much just for playtesting!

@Fenzy
You can always do an ‘Unlisted’ full publish of the map to have them play with you. It’s a bit more work than it should be but you can then have them all join as any other map.

But you have to pass moderation for that right ?
