Hey everyone
I am planing an open world map which is going to be an island with lots of rivers and smaller sea.
The intended terrain size is roughly 1200km² (~35km x 35km).
now for the rivers, there should be some kind of “flow control” for a more natural feel.
the more important thing though is performance. My scratched layout uses more than a hundred miles of rivers, some of which are merging with others at certain points.
im guessing splines are to expansive on such a huge amount of rivers, since i am aiming to get as close to photorealism as i possibly can on such a huge environment. also merging splines dont really gets the job done, since the attached meshes wouldn`t merge along with the spline, same problem as with roads.
it all comes down to 2 questions:
-
how would i go about creating the rivers, so they can merge seamlessly and would impact performance to much ?
-
what about tileable terrain? for the intended map size i would want landscape tiles, but how about rivers going from one tile to another? do i have to expect any issues?
any help is much appreciated!
Regards and have a good one
