Multiplayer Survival Game Template

To those of you waiting for the multiplayer, just thought I’d let you know that I’ve just announced and submitted my new asset to Epic Games. You can read more about that over here, but more importantly, that means I’m back to work on the multiplayer rewrite and should have some news for you all very soon!

Will the multiplayer be added to the current survival template available or will it be released as a new set of game assets that we’d have to purchase again?

It will be released as an update. You won’t ever have to pay again for the template, though the price may change for those who don’t yet own it.

Housekeeping and… MULTIPLAYER!

Bugfix for 4.10 and 4.11 version of template submitted.

I’ve just submitted a bugfix for the 4.10 version of the template, as well as the 4.11 update for the template, to Epic. No idea when it’ll propogate to the launcher… but it’s on the way.

Details below are for those who may have already done substantial work on the template and want to apply the two bugfixes themselves. Please remember that if you use the updated version of the template, it WILL reset all your variable settings. This is a weakness of blueprints and, sadly, cannot be avoided afaik.

Fix inventory size not correctly updating on bag drop when the dropped bag was the final bag in player inventory.

Multiplayer Details

So apologies on the delay for more details on all this… Recently I’ve been forced to pick up a number of shifts at my non-dev job to sort out money, and I also got a new PC so I lost some time on setting all that up… However, at this stage, the Day Night cycle, complete Inventory system, and several other pieces of the template are all up and running in multiplayer. The inventory was, by far, the most challenging part of the entire template to get right and working out the right way to do this in multiplayer was, also, quite a challenge. As it stands the current completed feature set is…

  • Main menu
  • In-game menu
  • First/third person toggle [no animations yet]
  • Game clock
  • Day/night system
  • Inventory system
  • World interaction indicator
  • Master pickup item
  • ALL NETWORKED!

So things are coming along nicely, if not a little slower than I had hoped. I can also confirm that I -will- be adding in the following features on top of the base features from the singleplayer version:

  • Armor system
  • Ammo system
  • Time-based world events
  • Crafting
  • Fast travel/Teleport system
  • Footstep system with support for multiple materials

I am considering adding a building system, but that will largely depend on how long the rest of the system takes to make. I am open to other suggestions for features, but I won’t promise anything.

I intend to post some screenshots and videos of progress soon, as the overall look of the template is getting a lot nicer and more professional.

Still waiting on word from Epic for the marketplace version being updated.

Apologies on the 4.11 update delay guys. Epic seem to have overlooked it, but have assured me it will be sorted out today.

I’ve also been ill so work on the rewrite has been slow. Will be back to it in the next day or two and make some progress updates to demo what has been done thus far. Thanks for your understanding!

So the 4.11 update finally got applied yesterday. Anyone holding off for this - go forth and tell me what I did wrong XD

Multiplayer blueprinting was certainly a huge learning curve, but I’ve got the hang of it now so things have been coming together nicely. Looking forward to sharing progress one of these days soon haha. Things are also looking a lot less **** (UI wise) than the singleplayer release haha.

Well, it took me far to long to get this video up… but here it is.

Please keep in mind that whilst the Day/Night cycle, inventory, third/first person view, and menu are more or less all complete. Most of the work done isn’t really ‘visible’ so it may appear that not much has been done, but it is very well under way. From here on, it should move very swiftly as the foundation is built. Anyways, here you are:

NOTICE: For some stupid reason, YouTube has removed the video for ‘inappropriate content’… I’ve reviewed the video, and as far as I can tell there is nothing in there that should be an issue… so I’ve appealed the decision and hopefully will have the video back up and the strike removed asap. If they take too long I will upload the raw video to my website for download, but I’d rather leave it on YouTube if possible.

I am also looking forward for this update! Do you have any ETA when the multiplayer update will be ready? I would like to start my game with this instead of coding everything from scratch.

Firstly, sorry for the delay in replying!

I have no real ETA on the multiplayer. It’s going to be done when it’s done unfortunately haha. I want to get it finished trust me, but unfortunately dev work is currently a hobby for me, so sometimes it has to take back seat. That said - will be sharing some more progress very soon. I am -hoping- to get it all finished up before too much longer passes, but it really depends on so many things that I just can’t give any sort of event guess.
