Mesh Distance Fields completely black!?

I have enabled distance fields in the project. Scene Depth works as expected.
I have even enabled 8bit mesh distance fields (thinking it would change something or at least force a recompile?)

Whenever I select the Visualize MeshDistance field everything is just black.
I most definitely have meshes on the landscape, not only in terms of foliage.

Distance Field AO is also all black
Global Distance Filed - all black
Mesh Distance Field - all black

I’m on a GTX 1080 TI custom water cooled. a bit old, but not an Intel card that would have this disabled.

My biggest problem is that I think this is entirely related to Depth Fade not working in my materials.

Any ideas / things to look at / settings I can tweak to get this working right?

Scalability is epic. Shader model 5 is enabled.

Did you find it? I have the same issue and I’m lost… I want to create a water shader with a shoreline around the objects in contact and I cant without this…
