Materials reverting to checkerboard

I have created a landscape and when I start applying materials, the sometimes work, but then all of a sudden they start turning to gray checkerboard. I am following a tutorial, and have checked and double checked the material and they are fine. What am I doing wrong?

Does your PC meet the minimum requirements to run UE4?

Hi, how many textures do you use / have you set them to shared wrap? If not you can only have about 16 (some of those get used under the hood so in the end you can only have a bit lower than that). With shared wrap you can have something above 200.

I am using a Mac mini M1 with latest Big Sur

Only using three textures

Since I am still very new at Unreal, I realized I need to provide more detailed information.
I have 4 layers of textures, dirt, grass one, grass two, and rocks. I filled the entire landscape with dirt, no problem. I started to brush in grass one, no problem. But when I tried to add either grass two or rocks, the squares turned to gray checkerboard, indicating the shaders had to re render if I understand correctly, but they NEVER change back. I am at a loss. Did this provide better clarification?

Sounds like more than three textures to me =)

Try to select all the textures you’re using for this material (whether they are all inside that material or you’re using them through material functions) and set their sampler type to SharedWrap
