Material Slot in the Nanite Assembly

When creating a Nanite assembly, it contains a material slot in the nanite assembly static mesh that overrides the material of the instances and I haven’t found any way to remove this override and let the instances have the material that they originally have.

Is there a way to remove that override?

Hi Diego,

Are you using the legacy USD Importer plugin or the Interchange OpenUSD plugin? The legacy importer had some issues with merging materials in 5.7 as it had some bugs that didn’t get fixed until 5.8 (CL 45235747). It is generally recommended to use the Interchange OpenUSD importer plugin to import Nanite Assemblies, as the legacy importer has been deprecated. It should merge parts’ materials into the same slot if they are assigned identical materials, but should otherwise keep their original materials intact.

Hope that helps!

Hello Jamie!

I am using the Interchange OpenUSD plugin.

But I don’t think it’s so much about keeping the materials defined, but the material slot that lives in the Nanite assembly itself.

I don’t have a material for the assembly, I just have materials assigned to the static meshes that are instanced in the assembly and I don’t want to override them in any way in the assembly.

Does it make sense?

Thanks!

Hi Diego,

Unless there’s a bug we’re not seeing on our end or there’s an issue with the way your particular USD is formed, the materials that are on the parts referenced by the assembly should remain unchanged on import. Could you provide us with an example USD that illustrates the problem? That might help us get to the root of the issue quicker if it’s a problem with the USD’s structure, or come up with the best fix it if it’s an importer bug that is still occurring in UE 5.8.

Thanks!

-Jamie
