Light shining through meshe when Exponential Height Fog is visible?

Hi there,

I’m a DP and editor and a first time user of the unreal engine. A friend of mine who owns a geeky bar asked me to make a stranger things inspired promotional video inspired by Stranger Things, and his idea was pretty much undoable without creating a 3D model of his establishment. But since I have been interested in phtogrammetry and 3D animation, I figured it was the perfect excuse to learn the software, since the client is a friend and the project was optional for him.

For the past 3 weeks, working with Unreal has been a pleasure. It is a big learning curve, but any problem I’ve had was quickly solved by this forum, a quick google, or a youtube tutorial. I’ve never used software with a better community supporting it.

Yet I know have a problem for which I cannot seem to find a solution. I am using an Exponential Height Fog in my project, and all the light sources seem to ‘bleed through’ my meshes.

Switching lighting methods does not help, and neither does switching off or on any raytracing settings I’ve been able to find. I’ve googled the problem for hours (I have 2 entries in this forum, but both were unanswered), and either I’m not familiar enough with the vocabulary, or it is just a really newbie problem that people can fix without seeking help online.

Assuming the latter, I’ve spent the last couple of hours playing with the settings in project settings, world settings, and the details settings, mesh settings and texture settings (when applicable) of every mesh, light, and the Exponential Height Fog.

I’ve included 3 screenshots. The first is just of the mesh and the light, so the positioning is clear. The second is the scene without Exponential Height Fog, where the lighting is working fine. The third is with Exponential Height Fog enabled, where suddenly the light blooms through the object.

I really hope someone can help, the project is done, all I have to do is light it, and this roblemwould be extremely limiting.

Thank you so much in advance!

Do you have volumetric fog enabled in your exponential heightfog actor?

Thank you for the reply. Yes, it is enabled. I’ve included a screenshot of all exponential height fog settings and the world settings.

Try enabling volumetric shadows in your light. You’ll need to disable raytraced shadows in your light as well, because raytraced features don’t support volumetrics.
