Whenever I open a menu or have the material editor, static mesh editor, etc open I get a massive FPS drop. Here is a video (sorry the FPS counter is so small):
As you can see it is maxed out at 120 fps, but plummets to <9 when I just open the dropdown menu.
I’m running on a GTX 1080 and i7 7700k. This happens in all projects.
We’ve also been seeing big fps drops in the office, mainly for those with GTX 10-series cards (one of us has a 9-series and it seems fine).
We’re still on 4.17.2, so maybe it isn’t a 4.18 issue? We tried turning off the “Use less CPU while in background” setting, and stuff like realtime thumbnails, and still just seems to randomly slow down.
Although I even get lower FPS while just using the Blueprint editor, so perhaps it isn’t the same issue.
Actually it does happen using the Blueprint editor too, at least for me. It happens basically everytime the focus isn’t on the viewport and I mouse hover over something.
Could be driver related? What drivers do you guys have installed right know, just to check? I’m using version 382.33
Found out what the problem was, thanks to this (at least in my case).
It’s the G-sync. I disabled it (for the time being at least, until they fix this) just for the Unreal Editor and the fps drops are gone!
To disable the G-Sync just for the Unreal Editor do this:
Open nvidia control panel
Go to Manage 3d Settings > Program Settings
Find the Unreal Editor executable in the list, or add it (it helps launching the editor before looking for it, since it will show the most recently used programs)
In the settings for the program look for “Monitor Technology” and select “Fixed refresh”
