How to use Initial Color and Alpha Over Life on a particle system?

I want to have particles that have a varying initial colour during the course of the particle system duration, but that also fade out over time.

I can add the initial color module and it works great, but as soon as I add the Color Over Life module in order to fade the alpha over time, the Color part of the Color Over Life is overruling my Initial Color settings.

How can I have just the Alpha Over Life part of the Color Over Life module and use it with Initial Color?

Use the Scale Color / life, set the color to constant 1,1,1 and adjust the alpha.
