Grass tool - use with Foliage Type / Foliage Component?

Is there a way to use Foliage Type or Foliage Component with the Grass tool?
It would be nice to have an unified foliage type that we could use with both manual grass painting and the grass tool. Specifying Foliage Component class allows to have some extra logic inside every Foliage Type, but the grass tool can’t use it - we can only specify a static mesh and that’s all.

If grass placed by the grass tool is stored as instanced static meshes, it should be doable.
