Fortnite MMORPG

Hello fellow Fortnite Creative enthusiasts! I am a developer who is interested in creating an MMORPG style game in Fortnite. I believe that the creative potential of Fortnite can be leveraged to create an immersive gaming experience that combines the best of both worlds: the creativity of Fortnite Creative and the social interaction and progression of an MMORPG. I am looking to connect with like-minded individuals and teams who share this vision and are interested in collaborating on this project.

The idea is to create a game that allows players to create their own characters, embark on quests, explore dungeons, and battle monsters in a persistent world that evolves and grows over time. The game would have its own economy, guilds, and a system for character progression, among other features. I believe that Fortnite Creative provides the perfect platform to create such a game, given its powerful creation tools, social features, and strong community of creators.

I am looking to connect with developers who have experience with Fortnite Creative, as well as a passion for MMORPG games. Post here if you have experience with scripting, level design, game mechanics, or any other relevant skills so we can start a conversation on creating the engaging game we desire.

Question:
What do you think are the key challenges in creating an MMORPG style game in Fortnite Creative, and how would you approach them?

If you are interested in this project and share my vision, please reach out to me. Let’s work together to create a game that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in Fortnite Creative!

I’d be willing to help out world building. Been world building in multiple games since the early TimeSplitters 1 map creator days.

I have experience with world building in: World of Warcraft (Personal test server), Far cry map creating, and many more games. I’ve been getting comfortable with the UEFN editor. I also have previous Fortnite maps and current (WIP) for example of work ability.

I’d love to be part of this project!

It’s a great idea and what I thought UEFN would be about, but right now it is a very long way from being usable for such a project:

Persistence (the ability to save game / player state between sessions) has been broken since last November. UEFN Persistence Announcement

There is no strategy for how player clothing / equipment will intergate with epic skins, this is fundamental to this type of game and very complex to change Player avatar customisation

You can’t hook into existing weapons or create new ones Can we create new weapons thanks to the unreal editor ?

There is no raycast functionality in Verse for testing line of sight Is there a Raycast-like API for collision detection?

I don’t believe you can send players between islands (very useful for instancing adventures / expanding your world system).

It seems hard to think of what you can do apart from bigger / custom Fortnite islands and add your own prop meshes. Yes you get access to trigger events and that adds to the original creative functionality, but I’m not really seeing much more (excepting aesthetics / anims).

My current take on UEFN as a metaverse tool is: come back in a year and see what has happened. Given the numerous and extended launch delays, I’m completely underwhelmed by what has been presented so far.

I don’t think the UEFN in its current form will be able to implement your idea. Yes, it already has a lot of features and will add more features… BUT it will always have limitations! I’m talking about the number of objects on the map, the number of players who can simultaneously play on the map, the total size of the map in terms of memory, and other indicators.

Your idea is interesting, it can happen and become popular but sorry it looks like “… guys let’s create our own GTA6!”.

There are two important factors in any team: competent people and money. The minimum indie development team is 3-5 people and none of them will work for many months for free.

Epic Games gives you the opportunity to earn money by creating your own worlds, maps and bringing people into them … so use it! Start small, create small maps and modes, a teacher to promote them and PR, bring people, collect feedback, improve new maps and slowly gather people to your team!

If everything goes well, then in a year or a year and a half you will find competent and faithful helpers for yourself, learn many processes, understand the whole process of creating a game from idea to release.

Write out a sequential plan in which your dream MMORPG game will be in the last place and consistently go towards it in small steps. Don’t try to do the impossible. Making a good MMORPG that is fun and keeps players is really a challenge.
