Hi everyone!
I’d like to share Echoes of the Lost, a single-player cinematic survival horror I’m developing solo, part-time, in Unreal Engine 5.8. The Steam page is now live, and I’ve put together an announcement teaser featuring footage from the current development build.
You play as Rook, entering a quarantined American town with a private response squad after communications and the military response go silent. What begins as a controlled investigation becomes a fight to get out.
The game focuses on:
-
Exploring abandoned streets and interiors for supplies, documents and alternate routes.
-
Managing limited ammunition and medical supplies during dangerous encounters.
-
Squad dialogue that responds to discoveries, danger and the characters around you.
-
Horror that gradually moves beyond infection into something the team cannot explain.
On the development side, I’m using Lumen with classic LODs, HLODs and culling. Nanite and Virtual Shadow Maps are outside the current production plan. I’m targeting mid-range PC hardware, with performance testing and optimization still ongoing.
A free demo is currently in development. Chapter 1 is planned as the first Early Access release, with a target playtime of roughly 2.5–3 hours. Neither is available to play yet.
The footage represents work in progress: visuals, audio and gameplay are still being refined. My immediate focus is finishing and testing the demo.
I plan to use this thread to share progress and discuss the development choices behind the game. Happy to answer questions about the current build and workflow.
Thanks for taking a look!
I’m treating this thread as a devlog — I’ll post progress as the demo comes
together, including the parts that don’t work and have to be redone. Questions
about the setup are welcome.
