Discovery is broken

Summary

To begin with, I don’t speak English very well, so I might make some mistakes.

Several creators are dissatisfied with the publishing process because their maps aren’t appearing in the new and updated sections. We believe this is due to the large number of creators currently flooding Discover with spam maps.

This is something that supposedly has been addressed, but they must have some way to bypass moderation. My maps haven’t even received 50,000 impressions per update, and yes, these are well-crafted updates since I recently implemented the payment system plus a bunch of other things.

I urge you to take this matter more seriously and investigate it. Clearly, something is wrong. It’s not normal for thousands of identical maps to be included in the discovery process while some of us don’t even have access, probably due to spammers like these.

Publishing

Steps to Reproduce

Publish a map and don’t even receive the 50,000 impressions they offer when updating the map.

Expected Result

End to creators who spam maps, all to occupy as much space as possible in the discovery section and prevent other creators’ maps from appearing.

Observed Result

Maps from small creators don’t appear in the discovery section, while other creators keep submitting spam maps to raise as much money as possible and take up space in the discovery section.

Additional Notes

As a creator, I’d like these kinds of things to be prioritized. It’s pointless to publish new content if, when it comes time to publish, it’s nearly impossible to get featured because of these spammy creators.
Of course, I don’t intend to offend anyone with anything I say here. (It’s exhausting to work and dedicate hours to something if these kinds of problems then arise.)

I’ve made 4 maps in 3 month, but I haven’t seen them hit the ‘New & Updated’ tab. Only 2 of them made it into ‘New & Updated 2’ and ‘New Experiences,’ but both rank low like #25-#10 and that was only one time. Even when I update them, they don’t re-enter discovery.
This issue has been going on for 3 months. Even after the discovery bug fix on December 18th, we haven’t seen any improvement. It’s not just me; many small creators are facing this too. Please fix this. Last year, we used to get discovery within 24 hours of publishing, and updates would push the map back into discovery within a week. Now, that doesn’t happen. Please, Fortnite, fix this issue and address the spam maps problem as well.

by design we want AI to spam new accounts and clog every entry in order to snuff actual creators out, by design we will rename creators to developers and influencers to creators to remind developers their place in all this, by design we have rigged the game for only our most successful spam bots to get seen and by design we don’t speak to people with issues we let a bot or ai talk to them because by design we have no morality, we don’t care by design, by design we are insuring micro transactions and dark patterns rule this ecosystem and by design things will only get worse because by design we are enshitifying everything :money_mouth_face:

Working as designed is just… wow…

Yes, talked about it in twitter last week:

I don’t want individual reports, I want this to be fixed.

by design we give our best botters our #1 slot instantly without any need to trickle up

by design “new” is made to make money, not to bring attention to new innovative maps that could potentially create new audiences, by design the maps are meant to look exactly the same every time and come from alt accounts from our most cherished account spammers

by design these are the accounts that should be in NEW

by design, we want creators to spam the same map over and over on the same account in order for that creator to show up 3-4 times in the same tab!

So this is closed because this is working as designed?

Are we sure about that @Flak

Really starting to worry about the future of this ecosystem if these situations are intended.

Yes, looks like someone either chose the wrong ticket or the wrong reason for closing. I update it. It will take a while to propagate.

Please help the small creators out, it’s really impossible to start as a creator of your maps never even reach discovery, even tough i work 30 hours for it

there is no protection against the obvious issue which is that someone can just spam new (copy paste) maps and clog the tab, spam new accounts with new maps even, nothing complicated about it, by design its suppose to show new so by design it can be easily exploited

the old new and updated was exactly the same, calling it new just made it extremely obvious for everyone, thankfully

Thanks for that but someone is closing all of the tickets without response about the topic, and now this topic stays open for months without response, i understand it a hard subject to deal with because of the high amount of growing frustration, but to be honest the silence does make it worse. and the frustration comes from people that clearly love uefn i do believe they do earn a response or statement about this

Hey @rip_fxvo , we’re working on it. Here’s an update that we just shared:

Hey DWDFN, Joey here - Director, Product on Discover.

I want to acknowledge that we see this, agree it’s frustrating, and we’re partnering across Discover, Publishing, and Moderation to address it.

We made some changes last year to how we filter similar content from Discover, and reintroduced developer spacing in rows. There are gaps, and some developers are publishing islands across multiple accounts to get around it.

There’s absolutely still more to be done. We have some changes going live this week that’ll reduce the amount of duplicative content hitting Discover, along with a larger effort to automatically detect and block duplicative content on publish.

Prevention is always going to be a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, so we can’t share every detail, but we’re definitely not ignoring this. The forum thread was accidentally closed and has been re-opened. We’ll also be creating an ongoing thread on the EDC so devs can keep track of the ways we’re working on the issue over time.

Thank you for responding @Flak

in the meantime while we wait, the new design just floods players into these maps that continue to be #1-6 in this slot.

the new design to highlight new maps is great, but as usual it comes with another catch, you will never be #1-6 because its just cycling in new spam exactly like this every hour.

notice how well they are doing? this is the first tab to represent the actual creators and this is currently what it looks like making discovery look a joke to players

Hello Flak,

Thanks alot for the communication. Does this change this week help us smaller creators that put allot of effort in our games being visible and getting into discovery again?. Do i understand it right that the spamm maps Block the good ones because its too much maps to show and thats why ours didnt get featured? Thanks alot

I appreciate that Epic is looking into the issue and it “needs triage”, however creators have been screaming about this for months on this forum and Epic has been mostly silent on the issue. Creators have shown example after example. It got so bad that the spammers were even mocking the system in plain view on this forum. Two different posts have discussed this issue in depth. My last count on these two posts Epic replied 3 times.

This is a two way street. Epic you need the creators as much as we need you. Your constant non-communication on large issues is really unacceptable.

Epic has chosen to highlight certain maps forever and give them non-stop exposure for 3+ years. You have made a business decision that you feel is good for the the long term stability of the community. I get that, I do. I am not sure I agree with it, but you have your reasons. But, allowing this spam map issue to go on unchecked for months and finally now say “hey yeah we might have a problem” is really shortsighted. This should have been fixed permanently last year, either with programming or the ban hammer. If you don’t have the technical ability to fix it, start banning creators and the issue solves itself.

This community has offered countless suggestions and you ignore us and those suggestions. The top 250 creators get a relationship manager to help them. The bottom 99.9% get nothing. How about selecting 15 or so good quality creators that have been around a while that have had marginal success, but are creating high quality maps and start listening to them in a group setting once a month or so. The community has a broad group of backgrounds. You can draw from the experiences of some of those people. I myself have been programming in the business world for 30+ years and have been a gamer my entire life and entered the UEFN space at launch. My UEFN partner is a 30+ year graphic designer with broad business experiences. There are many other creators in this space that have diverse backgrounds that have a lot to offer. But you have to be willing to listen to us.

This post has 190+ comments and 170+ votes. Epic replied in October about a fix they were putting in place, that marginally improved the issue. Since then nothing.
