Computer completely frozen when building lighting - very small level

So I started using UE4 a while ago, but I wanted to seriously make something this time. Anyways, a few days back I set up a scene, just a building with props here and there. I built the lighting and my computer froze, then I thought, oh it’s probably because of the level size, I’ll wait.

Today, I am using the third person level that comes with unity to test a few scripts. I add a house from the Starter Content > Architecture section. 4 walls, 1 floor. I build the lighting, and my computer freezes for well over an hour. So now I know it wasn’t my level, it’s the engine acting up. And it is really frustrating that every time I want to build, I know I will have to wait an hour+

If I had to rate my experience so far it will be 3/10 at most…

Computer Specs:

i7-3770 @ 3.4 GHz
8 Gb RAM
GTX 660

I had no problems with other engines before or UDK… This one though. Any ideas?

Hello Catastrophe,

This was a known and reported issue. The lightmap resolutions for the static mesh objects you are using for your floor are using the ‘Override Lightmap Resolution’ option within the ‘Details’ tab. To see what I am talking about, click on one of your walls and scroll down to the ‘Lighting’ section.

Take a look at this post in which I provided the workaround for the issue you are experiencing. We have fixed this issue in the upcoming release of the engine.

Override Lightmap Resolution Issue

Although the answer I provided was not the solution to this users specific issue, it should resolve yours. Let me know if you have any questions after attempting the steps provided in the link.

Thank you,

Ugh I can finally view my scene without worrying about freezing! Thank you

I fixed this freezing when setting landscape Static Lightning Resolution to 1 (default), was freezing with 64
