Black screen occurs when exiting a UEFN island and returning to the Fortnite lobby.

Summary

When testing a map created in UEFN, gameplay works correctly while players are inside the map. However, when leaving the map and returning to the Fortnite lobby, the game shows the normal loading screen and then gets stuck on a black screen, preventing the lobby from loading properly.

The issue occurs consistently and affects multiple players, not only the map creator. The map launches and runs without visible issues, and the problem only appears when the session ends and players attempt to return to the lobby.

Black screen when returning to lobby after changing island brand (UEFN)

I found the cause and a possible solution for an issue where an infinite black screen appears when returning to the Fortnite lobby after leaving a UEFN island.

Issue context:
The island was originally created with the Fortnite brand and was later converted to the K-Pop Warriors brand. After changing the brand, whenever players exited the island and returned to the lobby, Fortnite would remain on a black screen indefinitely. The game did not crash or close.

Solution applied:

  1. Changed the island brand from K-Pop Warriors back to Fortnite via Project Settings > Brand Selection.

  2. Fully closed UEFN and reopened it.

  3. When reopening the project under the Fortnite brand, the editor detected project errors and prompted me to resolve issues, which I completed.

  4. Launched a test session to confirm the project compiled and ran correctly.

  5. After verifying everything worked as expected, I changed the brand again to K-Pop Warriors.

  6. From that point on, the issue was resolved and the black screen no longer occurred when returning to the lobby.

Conclusion:
The issue appears to be related to an incomplete or inconsistent brand change within the project. Reverting the island to the Fortnite brand, allowing UEFN to detect and fix project issues, and then reapplying the desired brand resolved the problem.

I hope this helps other creators who encounter a similar issue.

[Solved] Black screen when returning to lobby caused by K-Pop Warriors AI devices (UEFN)

Summary:
An infinite black screen occurred when returning to the Fortnite lobby after exiting a UEFN island. The issue was caused by a K-Pop Warriors AI device.

Environment:

  • Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN)

  • Island using the K-Pop Warriors brand

Issue Description:
After leaving the island and returning to the lobby, Fortnite would get stuck on a black screen indefinitely. The game did not crash and no fatal error was shown.

Root Cause:
The issue was caused by the K-Pop Warriors Character Generator AI device.
Having this device in the project caused the session to fail when closing and returning to the lobby.

Final Solution:

  • Removed all K-Pop Warriors AI devices from the project.

Result:

  • The project now cooks and compiles correctly.

  • Entering and exiting the island works as expected.

  • The black screen no longer occurs when returning to the lobby.

Conclusion:
If a UEFN island using the K-Pop Warriors brand experiences a black screen when returning to the lobby, creators should review and remove K-Pop Warriors AI devices, especially the Character Generator, as they can cause critical issues when ending a session.

After running multiple tests and isolating project changes, I identified that the issue only occurred when a K-Pop Warriors AI device was present. Removing all K-Pop Warriors AI devices completely resolved the black screen issue when returning to the lobby.

Its not only involving k-pop islands i have a normal island with only my custom assets/fortnite props ect no ip island and it does it too

I…can’t. I kind of need those devices.
Hopefully, Epic will find another solution.

We’re checking into this, thank you!

I’ve had had this happen on multiple occasions as well. On non-IP islands. It’s not consistent either. But I’ve probably had this happen about 3 or 4 times over the past week or two. I will need to force close out FN as I cannot access any menus at that point.

FORT-1043015 is ‘Closed’ as ‘Fixed’. The issue will be addressed in 39.40.

Thank god for this its so annoying :frowning:

The issue is still happening after 39.40.

Also getting the same issue just black screen

This is not fixed. This also causes the escape button to not bring up the menu anymore which locks fortnite to then be force closed to do anything further.

You can click launch session then cancel and it works to refresh the ui as a workaround still

This issue is not resolved.

Thank you, I let the team know and they are investigating.

This also happens when leaving a br match and when your on the locker screen and go back to the play tab its a blue screen

Not fixed in 39.40

Testing JIP is now virtually impossible with this black screen bug. And since virtually every game developed is JIP (because we have to plan for low players counts, because Discovery is so broken)
