Bears Can't Drift! Game Dev Blog

I thought I would post up a few keys on here as a thank you for critique and feedback. Whoever gets it make sure to get some good critique up on the thread and if you like it, a recommend on steam would be appreciated (or not recommend if you thinks its **** :P)

FJMA3-PF892-QQZZJ

Make sure to check the specs. this is not a game for laptops! :stuck_out_tongue:

Sweet, thanks man. I will check it out when I get home and give some feedback

This is impressive , cant wait to see the final product

Hey all, some more screenshots of the arctic track for arctic hub world. I have tweaked the snow a bit more and Iā€™m pretty happy with it let me know what you think!

Update on the arctic hub environment. I think I just created the most beautiful scene of my career :stuck_out_tongue:

Now add sweetfx and watch your computer weep at itā€™s beauty!

Iā€™m reluctant to give too much feedback as the game is in early state and I know itā€™s going to change. But at first the open world menu was a little confusing. Also The menu options werenā€™t exactly clear to me what their function was either. But I was pleasantly surprised that the handling wasnā€™t as arcady as it looked in the videoā€™s Iā€™ve seen. The drifting is a little weird how it has some sort of force that is added in the direction of the drift. But like real racing, I find it faster and run faster lap times by not drifting at all.

no please do give as much feedback as possible  I may not know about it so its always worth mentioning!

What do you mean by the open world menu? the hub world? difficulty select? or gateways? Can you really do a faster lap time by not drifting? Thats impressive :stuck_out_tongue:

Ive been following this for a while now and I think it is looking . Have you had any thoughts on putting a bunny hop in? I know its very Mario-esk, but I think it would add some good fun. Either way though I will definetly be giving this a try with some buddies.

Tips for early access.
So I have learnt a few things while doing early access that I thought you all might be interested in. The big problem with early access is how it displays games. At the moment you can only find Bears Canā€™t Drift!? by searching for it which is murdering my sales unfortunately.

There are four categories for Early Access and I have not been on any of them because I made some poor decisions during release.

I didnā€™t realise at the time but ā€œNew and Popularā€ does not really mean new, it means popular. Unless your game is popular off the bat it has no chance of getting on there.

Not much to say on Top Sellers, fairly self explanatory.

The Coming soon section was another thing I missed. Your game doesnā€™t go into coming soon until you complete the checklist that steam provides and have your store page ready. As a result, Bears Canā€™t Drift!? spent only a few days in the coming soon section before being released when it could have had months of prime real estate space and started gathering a following. If your doing early access, get your page ready ASAP and get on the coming soon section.

Finally the specials section. Definitely give your game a first week discount because that gets you onto the specials section and you need that prime real estate to give your game the best chance at getting onto the new and popular.

I hope this helps anyone thinking of doing early access and make sure you donā€™t make the same mistake as me!

Anyway, enough rambling. Have some screenshots of the Arctic world Its starting to come together

Well something happened because youā€™re first on the list when I go to Early Access. Good job with the game so far. Iā€™ve been watching this for a while. Really glad you guys went local co-op off the bat but thatā€™s just my opinion.

Thanks, yeh I just saw it was a really nice surprise :stuck_out_tongue:

Been playing around with morph targets so the bear now gets fatter as he eats more food

lol, nice.

@Azzamat

Iā€™d woke up today reading the article about BCD on BBC (what also shows that Epic sharing things about our games helps LOL), was really nice sharing your thoughts with all of us.
About the ā€œno-code = cheatingā€ man, relax! Itā€™s not true. Until the guys that code are using a 3rd part engine because have no time to code a renderer, memory manager, integrate PhysX and a lot of other boring stuff that Epic already did and shared with us (what would make until the code guys cheaters if we follow the prejudice about BP users logic LOL).

I wish a lot of success to both you and Bears Canā€™t Drift.

Cheers!

Just curious, how did you get the gig with the BBC? Gotta say Iā€™m impressed

Itā€™s great to see you get this kind of exposure. Iā€™m about to release to early access next week and a lot of your advice helped a lot (especially getting the steam page up early). Iā€™m also glad to see other game entirely in blueprints. Keep up the good work.

All I know is, 5 pages of dev blog and I didnā€™t catch a single ā€œSnow Driftā€ pun. Iā€™m disappointed  Congrats on the early access launch though, I hope it continues to pick up ā€¦ Steam?

Wow guys thank you so much for taking the time to post  I am so flattered!
@creasso: very true  but unreals engine does so much for you that some times it does feel like cheating :stuck_out_tongue: I would never have been able to do the things I have done without it

@Lazy Games: I spent some of the dev grant to have a table at Develop Brighton. Rory happened to be at the event and came over. They seemed really interested in the development and it just kind of went from there.

@sanford87: Iā€™m glad it helped, Iā€™m thinking of doing an article on gamasutra if I get enough tips together.

@Ironbelly: I do apologise for not having enough pun relating shenanigans, I will do my best to remedy the situation :stuck_out_tongue:

I also have another tip for anyone going onto early access  Tag your game as soon as it comes out. I thought that the genre I had picked, ā€œIndieā€ and ā€œRacingā€ would mean it would come up when you searched for those kinds of games. Turns out that only happens if the game is tagged with that! If I learn any more I will make sure to post it up

I havenā€™t posted artwork in ages! I upgraded the project a while back which meant I needed to redo all the PS4 stuff which after several very long days and hair pulling I am now back up and running on the PS4! It turned out I had one normal map which was corrupted some how :stuck_out_tongue: Iā€™m doing a load of work on the last hub world, will post some screenshots later!

Here is a new fire particle effect I just finished
