Baked Lighting: how to get soft shadows for movable meshes?

this is for purely cinematic applications. I’m using baked lighting for my scenes, and using a combination of spotlights with large radii pointing into the scene, and the ‘’ method of bouncing light off of cards to fake area lights. My lights are all set to Stationary.

The static meshes look great and have nice soft shadows with good contacts, but what to do about the movable ones? What is the best method for getting high quality soft shadows for movable meshes with static/stationary lights? How about skeletal meshes?

Secondary point: even on static meshes, the shadows do actually look nicer with the ‘’ bounce method, as compared to a direct shadow from a large radius stationary spotlight. In the latter case, I can see some banding and hard edges - is this expected?
