Attack on Titan - Fan Game

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but couldn’t he release the base model and be fine? Like, maybe take away the eyes and hair and remove the patches, or something like that?

Also, if you do the get the physics down and release them, that alone will already be a huge contribution to anyone wanting to make the game,

Releasing a model is fine, only if it is separate from the game. The only time you would potentially run into issues with publicizing a character model from an IP is if it were ripped straight from a game. He modeled this himself, so if he chooses he can put the character up for download. Where it starts to get into infringement territory is if he were to release this character in addition to the gameplay mechanics using the Attack on Titan name. And keep in mind this is also dependent upon the company who owns the IP. Some companies are tolerable of fan games, but others who are invested in the game market themselves might not be so open to the idea. Ultimately as said he’s going to want to talk to the owners of the IP in order to determine whether or not he could release a fan game.

Oh, then he might be fine in that case. Also, if you don’t know, there is a very popular Attack on Titan fan game around right now that a lot of people play. It’s been around for a few months and they haven’t run into any problems yet, so even if he chose to make the game he might be fine. Still though, better safe than sorry.

One thing for the person making this…

Could i recommend you insert a lerp directional change from the current character direction to the vector that the grappling hook is located at?

It seems quite weird that the movement begins and he just sails through the air.

Since you are testing it, you’ll probably figure out some better ways to make the movement better than anything i can suggest.

I spoke with Kodansha USA and they claim no Attack on Titan Game was discussed with them so as of this moment there were no rights released to a company to make one. Though the japan Kodansha may have, but that is all the information I have gained thus far for you.

Wow that’s super sweet of you , thank you

But still, even if no games are planned right now, there’s still a license out there, and I doubt I can do whatever game I would like with it  So just to be sure I’ll stick to my plan but who know, if I managed to have something solid, you never know what could happen

Thanks again

You guys remember Bid For Power? I do. I clearly recall they got cease-and-desist way before they even got a chance to release it. However BFP was insanely popular. They probably had like 1 million hits+ on their site. They probably won’t notice you if you continue to lay low or stick to the ‘Fan Art’ thing

Fight now all he is doing is essentially portfolio work. i am in discussions with Kodansha even though they reply to me days later. they are a stingy bunch, but if I can get him any kind of rights to at least a game game that would be nice.

Ok I won’t bring that up anymore then you’re a good guy for taking the time to do that for him. Good Luck! I got permission once for a project. The owner of the IP was very cool.

It would be cool to have this kind of game for sure.

Hey guys, it has been a while.
But I’ve been learning rigging and animation, and now I’m proud to say everything here is done by me, although is far from being perfect and I still need to practice a looot more.
Also, since I learnt a lot about blueprint scripting since the beginning of the project, I decided to redo it from scratch to keep it clean ( and it’s good for memory  )

Absolutely amazing improvement! I’m in a very similar part of my game dev learning! Rigging and animation is rough! This makes me want to go back and redo my locomotion animations XD!

looks very very nice.
May I ask what material/guides/Tutorials you used for learning?
Also, Did you have knowledge of the subject?

Really nice work!

A little suggestion about his jump pose - I think that pose should only applies when the character is moving relatively horizontal mid air. When he starts falling it makes more sense for him to extend his legs down ready for landing.

You are doing good, I just feel like the cases on his hips have no weight when he runs and jumps etc. Would work on the weight part in animation. Overall you are doing great.

This is looking great. Could see it going the direction of a more action-oriented Shadow of the Colossus.

Can’t wait to see more!

Thanks a ton for the kind words

@Spade : Thanks man, animation is a lot fun actually, I’ve been modeling for a while now, but never tried to animate so far. I’ll definitely keep learning more
@Alexarg : For rigging, I used the video tutorial from Epic : Introduction to Animation & Rigging Tools (ART) | Unreal Engine - YouTube And for animation, I’m learning from Digital Tutors. I especially like the tutorials from Delano Athias, he is a really good tutor.
About prior knowledge, I had none in animation, but I’m professional character artist, so I’ve been studying anatomy quite a bit and it helped me a lot.
@Panupat Chong : I agree with you. But the game should be about grappling hook, and spending a lot of time in air so I’m not quite sure how to implement a more complex animation system. For now I would like to bring the grappling hook feature before going further in animation
@DieByZer0 : Thanks man ! You’re right I still need working on those animation  Since I’m still learning, I’ll probably redo all the animation from scratch again, when I’ll feel more confident, to avoid to redo some mistakes  Thanks for the help

I really like your character model/animations. Really cool stuff so far, keep it up!

Just a quick note here… but have you guys seen http://fenglee.com/game/aog/ ? It’s not in any sort of legal trouble…
