Anyone else excited with 4.5 Update?

Unity, but vegetation quality is suffering too much for adequate performance. Spent two weeks checking out CE3 but it was like going on a first date with a beautiful girl and noticing psychotic traits–you know she’s going to be trouble.

4.5-preview already showed me that there are many things I will have to change in my project. So I kinda have mixed feelings.
I’m not that excited except that finally Localization editor works and volumes bug is fixed.

But I’m still waiting for those wonderful days when UE will have screen space reflection for translucent materials and beatiful vegetation. I’ll make a level with a lake then, put on my oculus, sit down on a shore and will watch beauty with a big stupid smile on my face.

My response!

**Anyone else excited with 4.6? ** No, I’m just kidding, haha. Cannot wait to get my hands on 4.5 to try out the retargeting system. Yay!

So, totally worth it, then?

No, CryEngine is not worth it. Spent 2-3 years with it… Free SDK was great, but now EaaS model is not. My opinion! Feel free to try it though

Great! It’s been on the roadmap (with a lot of votes) for a long time, and there hadn’t been said anything about it, so I was starting to worry

Not a fan of Lightmass either but as it seems we’ll be stuck with it for the long haul, I’m hoping the foliage tool will be made to support it (as allegedly was on the to-do list until things went quiet for quite some time).

Hi , we’re currently finishing up support for lightmass / static lighting on instanced meshes, which includes meshes placed with the foliage tool. It’s 1-2 weeks away but unfortunately it didn’t make the cutoff for the 4.5 branch, but as soon as it’s checked in it will make it to , and it will be included in the 4.6 release.

I’m hoping that we get support to add video ingame, so we can make working televisions and cinemas and all that cool stuff

Now that I think about it, I hope anything done in 4.4 or earlier will work.

They have been pretty good about so far, And when they do break something a hotfix usually isn’t far behind.

Thanks, its good to know. I only used UE4 for under 3 weeks, & always in 4.4

4.5 Pre-release ( source) has already

Yeah, we all hope so!

4.5 from Twitch

  • UMG improvements, Yay!
  • animation re-targeting - OMG!!!
  • and lots of other “small things”

So far looks SUPER nice!!

I bet beautifull and fast grass rendering for 4.6

Heh, reading these comments I feel like 4.6 is what I am waiting for. Any improvements to foliage is great imo, better performance with a lot of instances would be great but guess that is not something we will see in quite some time.

I agree in some respects the standard dynamic lighting w / skylights and shadows looks great, we have a 32KM Squared terrain. Thing is it’ll never look as good as a scene with Lightmass or a dynamic GI solution. But as UE4 is at the moment anyway, I’m unsure whether or not the dynamic GI is worth the performance trade off… Things are being cut fine as is.

It seems Epic are taking steps to make our lives easier, especially with the sheer amount of complaints regarding lightmaps. It just needs some performance tweaks, it would actually be better if you could switch lightmass off on a per “scene” basis as opposed to per project.

Was foliage rendering better in UE3?

No. But you could easily create custom lighting model using material editor.

Deferred rendering have definitely it’s pluses, but it’s not terribly flexible to work with.
