Advice on creating painterly brush-stroke art style

Hi,

I’m been tasked with developing a 3D environment based on Vincent van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, and am seeking guidance on best practices for achieving a painterly visual style.

The scene geometry and lighting setup are progressing well, but we’re encountering challenges with achieving the distinct, expressive texture style that characterizes Van Gogh’s work especially the “impasto” brushwork and directional stroke patterns.

I’m specifically looking for support or recommendations in the following areas:

  • Creating stylized, brush stroke-based textures and materials for architecture, ground surfaces, and the night sky
  • Material/shader techniques that simulate thick paint strokes or dynamic surface movement to convey a hand-painted feel
  • Any existing tutorials or sample projects within Unreal that align with this kind of aesthetic

If there are internal resources, plugins, or previous examples that you could point me to, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Andy, I may have spoken with you over the past couple of weeks on this topic specifically. There are a couple of ways to approach this. Firstly, you could hand paint all of your texture maps, as well as the normals in photoshop or another DCC. Secondly, and my new personal favorite, use the newly integrated 2D Drawing system for Unreal Engine: https://www.fab.com/listings/c2a71aa9\-998c\-4286\-9d5b\-df91d9cc4034

Hope this helps!
