I noticed many of the characters have tons of material slots, meaning tons of draw calls. Considering how well optimized Paragon is I guess draw calls aren’t quite as expensive as I thought?

Hah, I was just going to say this! People will just rip the materials, slightly rearrange them, hook up some textures for assets and flip them onto the market.
Aaand what’s wrong with so called “asset flip” ?! Do you know how many game assets can be re-used to make new games?!
Nothing wrong with reusing assets, what people take issue with is reselling those assets wholesale or only slightly modified rather than using them as a basis for an original work.
No one’s that bothered by using some textures and crates from somewhere else as long as you have the rights. The problem stems from reselling these assets as your own or using game templates but not building an actual game on top.
I’ve heard “asset flip” regarding games made with assets from the Marketplace. Not regarding assets being re-sold, because that would not be legit and infringe on original IP.
What’s the point of using Marketplace assets (especially AAA quality assets like assets from Paragon) as a base for your own assets when one can’t re-bake normal maps?! Also modifying existing assets is such a pita that making one from scratch is a way better idea.
The way I see it, a solid game can be made using existing assets as-is.
This is huge! And it couldn’t come at a better time for me. Recently updated some core systems of the game and set with the default character for the player. These new characters possibly offer some nice alternatives for developing stage and probably beyond. EPIC!

You missed the point… It was that you take the material shaders, which are what usually make/break a mesh, and slightly modify the node graphs so that it doesn’t look like a blatant rip. From there, you plug and chug in your own models and sell them with the shader that you didn’t make and are calling your own. Don’t forgot to use some flashy clickbait marketplace image with a generic Daz3d female character that has her “stuff” almost hanging out.
Do you know how much work goes into making a AAA character skin shader? People will pay some serious money for that sort of thing. It’s not about the actual models/assets, it’s about the shaders that make them super high quality. Granted, everyone has access to these assets, so they can play around with them as they’d like, but a lot of people get easily confused by the overly complex node graphs. That’s where the asset flippers come into play where they make super simplified inputs to a material instance, that is based on a material that they did not create, and make a profit from ripping off someone else’s work.
I think it’s extremely nice of Epic. It seems a waste to let them idle on a hard drive when people can learn from them. The people that learn from the examples are more inclined to do better when making there own. Always nice to have a reference. If you remember “Pumpkin game model Hulk.” was released as free asset back in 2012. It became mixamo character, and I’ve never seen it in any game. I rarely see UE4 asset flips unless someone has put a ton of work into them. By that time they could’ve made there own. I see a lot of Kite demo, open world rocks in ue4 games. That’s it. Think I would rather have a movement/Locomotion system from Paragon that was in the live stream, but I dont need anything. Really only interested in the hair, and fur.

I almost feel sorry for all the months of me trying to reverse-engineer a bunch of the stuff done in Paragon.
