[WIP] Cinema Rosa - Classic Adventure Game in a Spooky Abandoned Cinema

**The Cinema Rosa is now on Steam

The Cinema Rosa on Steam**

Spread the word about our kickstarter campaign!

– The Cinema Rosa is an immersive PC exploration game set in an abandoned cinema. –

The game explores themes of: loss, romance, nostalgia and regret, aiming to take the player on an emotional journey through the psychological effects of a relationship. You take on the role of a protagonist exploring his past, through various personal demons.

Dream sequences allow you to relive an aspect of the past, told through a famous philosophical thought experiment (e.g. the library of babel, Mary’s room and so on). As you explore, you encounter various notes, objects and puzzles that you can interact with, reconstructing the cinema to its former glory days.

The game is due for release on PC/Mac in March, 2019.

Keen to get feedback.

Looks very UEish. You need to do something with lighting, reflections and shadows

Thanks for the feedback. Anything specifically? Do you mean making all three more intensive?

We’re on the way to a fifth alpha build of The Cinema Rosa, working on various bug fixes and various patches to previous builds.
We’re currently on the look out for more alpha testers. Comment below if you’re interested!!!
Screenshots:
Here are some new internal (development) screenshots of the game.
Below is a screenshot from the third dream sequence, featuring a foggy/misty environment with various ideas about the mind and human psychology:

Below is one of the many quotations we are using to advertise the game. This screenshot is from a library area which may or may not appear in the final product.

Below is another screenshot from outside the cinema - we’ve put a lot of work into designing the colours and updating the lighting in recent weeks.

Below is a screenshot of a cinema office environment - this is one of the key locations in the game for puzzle solving, involving a few different interactable objects!

Below is a lobby area in the cinema. The idea was to heavily rely on the art deco style to create an impressive environment, so long as the player looks up!

Below is a development shot of the lighting in the cinema during the intro video. We needed to improve the lighting slightly so that the audience could be seen - and weren’t entirely in the dark.

We welcome any criticism or comments about the images.

Here, we find an internal dev shot of the lobby. We’re working hard to add small details such as signs and interactive objects:

One of the main features of the game is the interactive movies and films. Below, you can find an image of a projector, something that you’ll need to use to unlock certain portions of the game.

Below is another dev shot. This time, we’re showcasing our 3D models we’ve used in the game. The game has been in development for over two years, so there’s a lot of new and unique content to explore!

Below is a screenshot of a side-room. In the 1930s, cinemas had lots of these small rooms tucked away for after parties, dances and to lounge in.

Hey, Dewbie,

Your game needs to be stronger to get a good following on kick starter. at this stage play to your strengths and hire in the talent later.

What gets peoples attention online for kick starters is either clear engaging game play, or interesting art direction.

So if your expertise is in development produce a demo with some polished gameplay and market that.

If it is in look development then create a number polished environments that convey the story and mood your project is going for.

The exterior scenes need alot more setting dressing and lighting iterations. I would say it about 3-4 “development passes” from being complete.

for example building up the background/city scape, Rosa Cinema destressing/Wear and tear, Street furniture, and then finally post processing and lighting passes. - And this is just for the Rosa cinema wide shot.

Buy kit bash packs of premade assets, use epic free assets from the levels they release. Conduct and read case studies for the type of scene you are trying to make. how does a building age? where do the signs of wear and tear show? how does real rain affect an environment in the real world, and how can you represent that in 3d?

One of these two things needs be addressed to high level before you stand a chance at reaching your 8k target.

I hope this helpped

Hey @Malachi93

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you on a lot of the changes that need to be done and as a level designer I’m always on the lookout to make things more impressive.

As it stands, I’m going to kickstarter with a demo of the game, which is indicative but not definitive on how it will finally look.

I’m hoping to continue improving the graphics as I go. Wear/tear and city-scape improvements are both on my list of expected improvements.
There are definitely 3-4 passes needed - but I’m hoping to get at least some work done in the month.

In terms of rain - I actually have rain drop effects, sfx and puddles. I will definitely be adding more weathering along with that.

I’ve had really positive feedback so far on the game’s atmosphere/mood. There’s a free demo currently available on our Discord channel if you’re interested.
