Why does UE4 import about 40 default materials along with my model?

Hi, I’m new to UE4, and I’m having some difficulty importing a model from 3DS Max. Whenever I import the model, UE4 brings 40 or so default materials with it that have no apparent relevance to the model. In addition, I have a texture with an alpha channel that fails to work in UE4. Instead of having transparent parts, the texture has a white background. I looked in the content browser, and the diffuse file carried over from Max, but not the alpha file. How would I go about fixing all this? Thanks.

Hi!

UE4 does not import materias. UE4 just create placeholders for materials. After import geometry, you need import all textures and recreate all materials from scratch. Then assign these materials to your geometry like in your scene in 3DS MAX.
