Why can't the island and waterbodyocean be perfectly integrated?

Why is the water on my island divided into two layers, upper and lower?

And why is there a layer of empty space between my island and the sea level?

I watched several videos about water system and the official UE water system documentation. The gist is to enable the “landmass” and “water” plugins, check the “enable edit layers” option for the land, create a land plot, drag in a waterbodyocean, and the land plot and the waterbodyocean would seamlessly blend together.

This problem is very strange and I haven’t found a solution either. BTY, my UE version is 5.5.4. If you know how to solve this problem, please let me know.

Thank you very much.

Hello there @HANDSO_BOY!

Checking around the community, this conflict with the water plugin tends to happen from time to time. First of all, the water split in two different levels, that’s most likely due WaterBodyOcean and Water Far Plane rendering at different heights, which creates the seam you are seeing. And then, you have a gap between your coast and your sea level, and that’s indeed related to the “edit layers” check in landscape. Let’s go step by step:

  • To remove the seam, you can scale the affected actor and avoid the separation all together, as Far Plane is used as a background fill only. Select your WaterBodyOcean, then scale the spline outward, so the mesh covers everything and the seam line is pushed beyond your horizon

  • As for the gap, the order is key. Please make sure that your landscape was created first, where you enable the “edit layers” check, and then you add the WaterBodyOcean at Z = 0 level. If your current ocean was set before this step, then you will need to delete it, and create a new one

  • Regarding the landscape itself, it should also be a Z = 0 level, so calculation between it and the ocean body are correct. If there are still discrepancies between the shore, you can use the sculpt tool and build your terrain upwards, until any and all gaps are covered

The key approach here, with the water plugin, is to raise your island from the sea, rather than molding the sea around an already sculpted land. As long as you start with a simple, flat landscape, put the ocean at the same level, then sculpt up, it should work as intended.
