Hey there @W.Moth! Welcome back to the community! So the material overlay feature was introduced in Unreal Engine 5.1 and only applies to skeletal or static meshes.
Hello - I have the same problem! It is most definitely nowhere in any of the skeletal or static meshes’ details panel. Does it have to be activated first through a plugin or some other way before it becomes available?
Hey there @ZwormMusic1! Welcome back to the community! I’ve been unable to replicate missing the overlay feature in UE5.1 myself, so I will have to gather a bit more information. I’m not sure what plugin adds them, but I believe it’s part of the base SM code now (I will look through the source to verify that). From what I’ve tested so far, the base templates Third person, first person, and XR all have the overlay on outliner details. Just to verify, you’re looking at the actor’s details as a scene object right?
Hey there @W.Moth, I think I may have figured it out, you may have too at this point but I thought it might be worth mentioning in the forums.
In the inspector for the actor or gameobject under “Details”, if the actor name is selected then you will not find this option, however, if the static mesh component is selected then the overlay materials tab will be visible.
