Weird Performance and Stuttering Issues in UE5 Editor

Hi, I’ve been having some strange issues in my editor for the past few days. Everything had been working perfectly fine, until I created a new project. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the editor kept stuttering in irregular intervals. Also, whenever I click on a button or try to interact with the user interface in any way, the whole application freezes for 2-4 seconds. I’ve tried every solution I found like updating my graphics drivers, disabling UDP transport, disabling certain plugins and even reinstalling the entire engine, yet the error persists. This confuses me, as I have never had such problems before and the engine ran normally. I have not tried running a game/playing in editor, because the performance makes it impossible to do any kind of work, even for testing purposes.

(Please excuse any mistakes, I’m not a native speaker.) Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey @HollyWretch, welcome to the forum community!
Have you tried running the UE5 Profiler to see where the performance issue is coming from? It runs side-by-side with Unreal to give updates on performance. My only other follow-up would be which specific version of Unreal you’re working with?
I hope this can help,
-Zen

Hey @HollyWretch! Welcome to the Forums!

To add on just a touch more to what @ZenLeviathan has asked. You mentioned that this happened when you created your latest new project.

  • Is this your first UE5 project?
  • If it is not, were precious ones converted from UE4?
  • Is this an older pc? Do you have Lumen enabled? Have your tried disabling it?
  • What settings did you choose when creating your project? Have you tried using scalable as the quality preset instead of maximum?

Any additional specifics you provide may go a long way in solving your problem!

Hi,
I am using version 5.0.3, this is not my first UE5 project, and the one where I first encountered the problems was not converted from UE4 either. This PC is actually comparatively old, and is far from a current system to say the least (see specs below. sigh). However, I have been able to use the engine smoothly and have never had any performance problems. Disabling Lumen had no direct effect, except that my frame rate dropped significantly for a few seconds. In terms of settings, it is a normal empty project with the maximum quality preset. I also created a project with the scalable setting. The latter ran more smoothly of course, but both still have the problem that the application freezes for a few seconds whenever I click on something (specifically the content browser).
Pc specs:

Intel(R) Core™ i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
RAM 16,0 GB
Gtx 1060 6gb
x64 bit System (Win10)
1 TB HDD
2 TB SSD

Hey @HollyWretch,

You can try to switch to directX 11 to see if it improves performance, but it may only be marginally. Ultimately with a 1060, however, I would highly suggest upgrading to a more recent setup or sticking with 4.27 if you can, as UE5 get’s pretty intense and often more than the older cards can handle.

I hope you find a solution that is suitable for you or someone else has a suggestion that works for your situation!

I’ve been having the same issue as of late. Updating to 5.1 didn’t fix the issue. I have a 6700xt so performance is certainly not an issue, but right clicking on the UI or trying to interact with any element causing micro freezes for 2-4 seconds.

I also have the same issue with 5.1 update,I tried everything but didn’t work.Previous version 5.03 work without any freezing problem but it started when I converted project from 5.03 to 5.1 version.

Hello!

I was having stuttering/hitching issues in empty UE5 projects as well, I found that disabling the UDP Messaging plugin and restarting the engine resolved the issue for me, I found an old post referencing UE4, but it appears to still cause issue in UE5. Hope this helps!
