Weird ghost looking bokeh on wide angle shots

I’ve got this recurring problem on wide angle shots with a ghosting look on the bokeh of the objects close to the camera when using circle DOF.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution to it?

An idea - the mip for the object is the lowest it can be because it’s out of the normal field of view of the camera?

To be honest, if they paid you to make this effect on purpose you probably couldn’t XD
