Hello masters! i want to learn real time game fx. Which software can go with unreal vfx better. Blender or Houdini? there are lot of industry artists making effect with houdini and unreal. But its so expensive. could blender do the same result? I am from advertising and animation industry, i know Maya pretty well and Maya cant do what houdini does with unreal. But i think its Go to software for character animation and Modeling.
Try effekseer, houdini and look up cghow on youtube. Good luck.
Hey !
If you’re new to VFX for games,
You need to know that the process can be different from doing VFX for movies
I would suggest if you’re new to it to have:
- Photoshop or Substance Designer (to create all your textures (noises, trails, …)
- Embergen (If you’re new to it, it will be waaaay faster to create an explosion on Embergen than Houdini, maybe if you need to use Houdini, it will be for blood or some liquids effects)
- Blender or Maya or 3DSMax or something like this to create all your meshes and make some specials UVs for some cools effects !
- And Niagara to build up your effects with all the softwares you used above ! (Cascade is a bit old, it’s the old particle system of UE, so go for Niagara !)
(Not really agree with CharZulu, I was looking to learn VFX like 5 years ago maybe, and I watched some CGHOW tutorials and it’s not really for beginner, I think you can watch it to know what you can do, but if you need to LEARN, I think there’s some guys that are explaining much better than him )
Hope it will help !
There’s a lot of others tutorials on Youtube ! Good luck
Don’t hesitate if you have more questions !
Thank you so much!
