VR Development: How to add hit detection on swing of an object?

Hello! So I am having a decent amount of trouble trying to figure out what I need to do to make it so when my character swings a sword it will apply damage and some knock back to enemy AI? I am not really sure where to even start doing that. Also as a whole I am having trouble with the whole applying damage thing cause I made a projectile type weapon, it shoots on command so that is good, however i can not get it to generate any hit events either. Any sort of advice or help would be appreciated!! Thanks in advance.
