Visual Studio not compiling the project

Hi everyone, I’m having trouble compiling my Unreal Engine C++ project in Visual Studio.

The build fails because Visual Studio always picks the newest .NET SDK version that I have installed, in this case .NET 9, while Unreal requires .NET 6.

I don’t want to uninstall newer versions since I need them for other work, but Unreal’s build still breaks because of this conflict. I tried to ask to AI but it does not help as always.

Does anyone know a good way to make Visual Studio use .NET 6 for Unreal without having to remove the other versions?

Indeed, dealing with all components between UE and VS can be quite an ordeal. Checking with my peers for this scenario, it should be possible to force UE to use .NET 6 only, thus avoiding the need to install .NET 9.

First of all, go to your UE install folder (usually Program Files\Epic Games\UE), and create a file with the name “global.json”. Open it with Notepad, and add the following:

Just make sure to replace the “xxx” with the exaxt version of your installed SDK. Once that’s completed, I would also suggest a cache clear, via deleting folders “Binaries” and “Intermediate” from your project directory, then rebuild the project in VS to implement all changes.

Finally, test compiling again, the engine should use .NET 6 from now on. Additionally, if you need to further check for any component versions in your build, check UE’s documentation on the matter:

I fixed my Visual Studio / Unreal 5.4 build errors with .NET SDK. The issue was that Visual Studio as I mentioned kept trying to use .NET 9 instead of the required .NET 6, and then after I forced it to use .NET 6 it still failed because my 6.0.428 SDK install was incomplete (missing Microsoft.NET.Sdk).

So, I repaired the .NET 6.0.428 SDK (full SDK, not just runtime) from Microsoft’s site.

That restored the missing Microsoft.NET.Sdk folder so MSBuild could compile Unreal’s C# tools.

Also, I forced Visual Studio (before installing the repair) to use the SDK 6 by adding to the environmental variables this:

Just wanted to add a follow-up to this thread for anyone who is running into this build failure on UE 5.6 but wants to stay on the latest .NET 8 toolchain without downgrading to .NET 6.

The accepted solution of using .NET 6 is a great workaround, but I found that the root cause is actually two separate issues: a vulnerable NuGet package (Magick.NET) and the obsolete VisualStudioTools plugin. By fixing those directly, you can get a clean build on the latest version of Visual Studio 2022.

Here is the definitive step-by-step guide that worked for me:

Part 1: Fix the Magick.NET Vulnerability Error This is the root cause of the C# toolchain failure. The solution is to manually update the package version in three of the engine’s project files.

  1. Run a text editor as an administrator.

  2. Open each of the following .csproj files:

    • <EngineDir>\Engine\Source\Programs\AutomationTool\AutomationUtils\AutomationUtils.Automation.csproj

    • <EngineDir>\Engine\Source\Programs\AutomationTool\AutomationTool.csproj

    • <EngineDir>\Engine\Source\Programs\AutomationTool\Gauntlet\Gauntlet.Automation.csproj

  3. In each file, find the line for Magick.NET-Q16-HDRI-AnyCPU and change its version from 14.7.0 to 14.8.1.

Part 2: Fix the VisualStudioTools RulesError This error is caused by an obsolete plugin that conflicts with modern VS 2022 versions (17.9+).

  1. Run File Explorer as an administrator.

  2. Navigate to your engine’s plugins directory: <EngineDir>\Engine\Plugins\

  3. Permanently delete the folder named VisualStudioTools.

  4. Next, open your project’s .uproject file in a text editor.

  5. Find the "Plugins" section and delete the entire block for "VisualStudioTools".

The Mandatory Final Step: Clean and Rebuild These changes will not take effect until you perform a full clean and rebuild.

  1. Close Visual Studio.

  2. In your project’s root directory, delete the Binaries, Intermediate, Saved, .vs, and .sln files.

  3. Regenerate your Visual Studio project files.

  4. Open the new .sln file and build the solution.
