Video Card Crash while in VR using Pre

While I’m testing out our VR game, I have gotten at least two video card crashes. It crashes so hard that all of my displays go completely black and don’t recover, so I have to physically power off my computer and power it back on again.

My game scene is a test scene with minimal geometry and the shaders aren’t very complex, so it’s unlikely that the video card is overheating or having issues rendering anything. I can’t find any crash logs for the video card though.

I’m using UE4.9.1

I have a Pre installed AND an Oculus DK2, though only the is active. The Oculus service is still running, so I can quickly swap HDMI and USB cables if I need to test something on the other platform. I’m not sure if the Oculus Service is interfering with the ?

Video Card: NVidia GTX 970

Video Card Driver Version: 364.47 (last updated two days ago)

Is my driver incompatible?!

Here is the event generated within event viewer when my video card crashed:

Just a quick update: I’ve had this happen three more times today. I think it happens frequently enough that I can reliably reproduce it. It’s just a matter of spending X minutes in VR on HTC Pre.

here’s my DxDiag file: link text

Hello ,

I was unable to reproduce this issue on our end. I have a few questions for you that will help narrow down what issue it is that you are experiencing.

Quick questions:

  1. Can you reproduce this issue in a clean project?
  2. If so, could you provide a detailed list of steps to reproduce this issue on our end?
  3. Does this issue still occur in the 4.11 version of the engine?
  4. Does this issue occur when using other programs (other than the Unreal Engine)?

Hi Rudy,

I was able to reproduce the issue reliably on my end in my project in 4.9.1
After a lot of testing, I was able to isolate the cause of the crash down to the hardware drivers released by NVidia. Version 362.00 works without any crashes. The newer drivers were no good. I think I read a week or two ago that NVidia actually retracted the 364.47 drivers due to instability they caused. I haven’t verified that the newest drivers work without crashing, though I’ll probably get to that eventually in 4.11

Thank you for your information, it sounds like you have resolved your issue. I will be marking your last comment as an answer. If this issue returns and it does not appear to be the drivers please feel free to reopen this issue with any additional information that you may have.

Make it a great day
