Verse UI texture_block and color_block render in UEFN but draw nothing on the published island

Summary

Custom Verse UI fails to draw on my published island while rendering correctly in UEFN editor sessions. Every texture_block and color_block in a canvas draws nothing, while text_block in the same canvas renders normally. The canvas also stops accepting mouse clicks and controller navigation. Fortnite’s own HUD is unaffected.

This affects two unrelated devices on the island - a map vote screen and a shop - so it is not specific to one widget or one canvas.

Critically, a color_block loads no asset at all (no texture, no cook, no streaming) and it still does not draw. That rules out missing or uncooked assets as the cause.

Island 6296-8377-8773, releases 26 and 27. Fortnite ++Fortnite+Release-42.40-CL-59343437, Net CL 58430987. Reproduced on PC and PlayStation.

Verse

Steps to Reproduce

  1. In UEFN, build a Verse UI canvas containing a texture_block, a color_block and a text_block, and add it for a player with player_ui.AddWidget using ui_input_mode.All.
  2. Launch an editor session and open the canvas. All three widgets render correctly and the canvas accepts mouse and controller input.
  3. Publish the island.
  4. Join the published island and open the same canvas.
  5. Observe that only the text_block renders. The texture_block and color_block draw nothing, and the canvas no longer accepts clicks or controller navigation.

Expected Result

A Verse UI canvas renders identically on a published island and in a UEFN editor session, and continues to accept mouse and controller input.

Observed Result

On the published island only the text_block draws. Every texture_block and color_block is invisible, and the canvas accepts no input at all. The identical code and the identical island render correctly in an editor session every time.

Ruled out through testing: island version (release 26 both worked and later failed), client build (identical CL either side of the break), player count and server instance age (fails solo on a freshly started instance), a widget-leak bug in my own code (found, fixed and shipped in release 27, no change), proximity voice chat (it was enabled while the UI was still working), and asset size (a memory snapshot shows my own textures at roughly 10 MiB of 1,480 MiB total, the remainder being Epic content).

Additional Notes

Note for whoever investigates: published islands emit no Verse Print output to the client log. The Fortnite client log contains engine LogVerse entries but zero prints from island code, so this cannot be diagnosed from the creator side. All of the above was established by elimination and by comparing editor and published sessions directly.

FORT-1185417 has been created and its status is ‘Unconfirmed’. This is now in a queue to be reproduced and confirmed.

Hi @PapaPurge could you verify if this is still happening after 43.00? If it is, could we get two logs?

One in the edit session where it’s working, and one in the island code where it isn’t. Please make sure those are separate logs, and the client is closed and reopened between them.

Thank you!
