I would suggest a subscription model for your project. Based on what you are describing, it sounds like your project would fall under the “Linear Media” exemption of the royalty.
However, no royalty is owed on the
following forms of revenue:
The first $3,000.00 in gross revenue
for each Product per calendar quarter;
Revenue from linear media which is
Distributed in a form that does not
contain or, in order to deliver, rely
on servers running the Licensed

We are a music & video production team, based in Belgium, looking for new techniques to integrate in our music videos. We think the Unreal engine (being the Unreal Engine 4 or UDK) could be a great tool to help us create this high quality product we aim for.
Our main goal is to create a digital environment, using your engine, which we would combine with photoshop, live images, scale models and greenkey shots.
We would like to know which license/version would allow us the use of your engine in our music videos. And if there are any other fees connected to the usage, other limitation and/or obligation?

- Does the UDK license allow us to use its engine in linear media products?
- Are both engines similar in use? (start with UDK to learn and then upgrade to UE4)
- We do use paypal but haven`t got a credit card connected which is needed for recurrent monthly payments. Can we pay a year subscription and renew in time? Paypal or wire transfer. e.g 228 euro payment via Paypal or wire for usage untill mid november 2015.

I would not say they are similar. With UE4, you have access to the source C++ code, Blueprints (Kismet no longer exists), backward rendering (UDK is forward), UMG replaced Scaleform, Media Assets replaced Bink, etc etc. UE4 has a lot to offer for current gen graphics and rendering.

We currently do not have a long-term payment plan option. What you can do is subscribe once, cancel, but continue using UE4. The active subscription only gives you new content and updates, but you can always keep your copy of UE4.

Hi Alexander, it was 4 years ago when this thread was created. I wanted to revisit and expand on this question of UE4 being used for linear media. If UE4 technology was used for a music video purely for promotion of original music. Are there existing licenses or agreement governing revenue from only the sale/s of the music? If so please direct me to where I can read such documentation. Thank you.
