Easily my biggest issue with Light Propagation Volumes is that it’s impossible to tweak them to look good at close range as well as in the distance. This appears to make them completely unusable in medium to large scale open environments.
Image 1 (LPV scale 5312): Foreground looks good, background is much too dark.
Image 2 (LPV scale 40000): Foreground is much too bright, background looks good.
Could this problem could be solved by using a separate LPV with different settings after a certain distance from the camera, similar to replacing cascade shadows with distance field shadows after a certain distance threshold? I’m sure it’s not as easy as it sounds and would come with quite a hit on performance, but the only alternative I see right now is not using dynamic global illumination at all, which would be a bummer.
Does anyone know if something around these lines is possible?
Image 3: Photoshopped combination of image 1 and 2. Both foreground and background are lit correctly.
