Use Niagara to spawn points of light at a specific location.

Hi!

I want to show points of light and, instead using actors with an emissive material, someone has suggested me to use Niagara particles. However, I don’t know anything about Niagara.

Rather than starting to read and look at everything I can find about Niagara without knowing whether it will be useful for my purposes, do you know of any tutorials that explain how to achieve my desired outcome?

Those points of light will be like stars in the sky, and they will be visible all the time, they won’t disappear. Also, I have a TArray of FVector with the location of all of them.

Thanks!

You can surely make a lot of emissive persistent points with Niagara, as well as with actors, or a single actor with an instanced mesh component.

The problem with Game Dev, though, is you can achieve almost everything in hundreds of ways  It is a matter of choosing the most optimal way, which depends on your goal.

If you want max control, with a lot of gameplay around your “points”, a single actor for each dot is cool. It will be unnecessarily heavy if you have hundreds of them.

Niagara will probably be the most optimized one, but spawning and controlling them, and using them in gameplay, while possible, is the most cumbersome if you have no experience with it.

Instanced meshes are usually something in between in both aspects.

If you’d like me to help you decide, you’d need to share your goal and the purpose of your “points”.

Cheers

Thank you so much for your answer.
